Hailed for Peaceful Disintegration of USSR, Gorbachev Turns 80

Mar. 2 is the 80th birthday of Gorbachev, former Soviet president, whose policies led to the end of the cold war and the demise of USSR. For this, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990. World leaders are congratulating his 80th birthday. Russians are launching a grassroots movement called “Tribute to Gorbachev.” His insuperable merits have gone down in history.

On Mar. 2, Russian President Medvedev paid a visit to congratulate Gorbachev on his birthday and confer him the highest honor, the Order of St. Andrew for his outstanding contributions, commenting that Gorbachev led Russia in a "very complex, dramatic period".

Russian PM Putin also wrote to praise Gorbachev. Foreign dignitaries, including ex-U.S. President George Bush and German Chancellor Merkel congratulated him. Ex- U.S. ambassador to Russia, Jack Matlock, Jr. said, he “for the benefit of all mankind, changed the world."

After Gorbachev celebrates his birthday with friends, there will be a grand celebration in London. A ceremony to confer 1st “Man Who Changed the World" awards by his foundation will also take place.

Russians thanked Gorbachev for ending ex-USSR's dictatorial rule in many different ways, including erecting many large “Thank you, Gorbachev” billboards. Yekaterinburg's Lenin Ave was renamed Gorbachev Ave.

Gorbachev attended his photo exhibition on Mar. 2. Reflecting on the changes, he said, “Our changes gave Russians freedom to speak out their minds. Before that time, Russians lived in fear. They could only talk about their thoughts in the kitchen, in the music of radio or in the noise of a vacuum cleaner.”

After WWII, the Communist bloc led by former USSR and the democracies engaged in a 40-year cold war. In 1985, Gorbachev, once regarded as a hardliner, became the youngest USSR leader. He attempted to prevent the demise of Soviet Communism through reforms and opening up.

Shi Dong, a commentator at Radio Free Asia: Not long after Gorbachev assumed office in 1985, he implemented two major policies: political reforms and freedom of speech and publication. However, many elected representatives quit the Party. Eventually, Moscow Mayor and Party Secretary Boris Yeltsin joined the opposition and left the Party.

In 1988, Gorbachev announced that USSR gave up the Brezhnev Doctrine and reduce its interferences with the internal affairs of Eastern European countries. This policy led to the drastic changes in Eastern Europe in 1989 and put an end to the cold war.

German-based expert on totalitarianism issues, Zhong Weiguang: “Before 1989, people all thought the communist regimes were unshakable, but after the Berlin wall collapsed on Nov. 9, 1989, the entire Eastern European communist bloc collapsed, which gave people a strong belief, that is, the communist parties are bound to perish.

On Aug. 19, 1991, the Soviet hardliners staged a coup. They put Gorbachev under house arrest for 3 days and sent out tanks to suppress people's protests. Then-Russian President Boris Yeltsin, stood on a tank in front of the parliament building and made a speech, persuading the military to refrain from firing at people.

After failed coup of the hardliners, Yeltsin announced to dissolve the Communist Party. Gorbachev also announced self-dissolution of Soviet Communist Party and resigned from his position as the General Secretary of the USSR.

New York Times reported on Mar. 1, Gorbachev is the greatest politician in the 20th century. He didn't fight against the people to the end and bloodshed his motherland. Instead, he surrendered his power gracefully. The CCP and Gadhafi, who slaughter the protesters, should learn from Gorbachev.

Gorbachev once advocated the establishment of a museum to commemorate Stalin's millions of victims so the brutal atrocities by the Communist regime will not be forgotten by people.

On Feb. 21, at a press conference in Moscow, Gorbachev harshly criticized Russian President and PM for deviating from democratic principles. He also said the embalmed body of Lenin should be removed from its mausoleum in Red Square. He supported the anti-dictatorship waves in Egypt,
Tunisia and other Middle Eastern countries.

In 2008, Gorbachev announced to re-enter politics after he resigned as a Soviet leader 17 years ago. In 2002, he was elected as leader of the Russian Social Democratic Party. In 2007, he was elected as chairman of  the League of Social Democrats.

On Jan. 4, 2011, Southern People Weekly published an interview of Gorbachev. It is rare that CCP's media published any interview with Gorbachev in fanfare. This attracted a lot of attention and heated discussions.

The article commended Gorbachev for conforming to the public opinion 20 years ago, and opening up the democratic gate for the USSR. Gorbachev stressed the key for political reforms is the reform of the parties, i.e., give up one-party rule. Mao was quoted: “USSR's today is CCP's tomorrow.”

20 years after the demise of Soviet Communist Party, the CCP is also facing the same crisis of collapse. To date, there have been over 90 million people quitting the CCP and its affiliated organizations.

Global Quitting the CCP Service Center said, the CCP's tyranny is coming to an end, and the CCP's quitting waves would ensure a peaceful disintegration of CCP in the near future, opening up a path for the political transition of China.

Supressing Foreign Journalists at Wang Fu Jing (W/ English Sub)

(VIDEO IN CHINESE, WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES)

Reflections of a Chinese Journalist (W/ English Sub)

"Reflections of a Journalist" Didn't Speak Freely

Ex-editor-in-chief of Southern Metropolis Daily, Cheng Yizhong, at University of Hong Kong, made a speech titled "Reflections of a Journalist”. Chinese netizens broadcast it live on micro-blogs.
However, the Chinese authorities have required all media and websites to block his speech.

What was Cheng's speech about?
Why are the authorities so afraid?

Born in 1965 in Anhui Province, Cheng Yizhong is a well-known Chinese Journalist. In 2005, he was awarded the UNESCO World Press Freedom Prize.

Cheng participated in the founding of Southern Metropolis Daily. He also served as editor-in-chief of Beijing News. On Feb 20, in a speech at University of Hong Kong, he mentioned his idea of newspaper's value: "Monitoring those in power, balancing public authority, and implementing the right to information”.

He said incisively: "objective, factual, original, independent, impartial, open – that's the value of newspaper".

Founded in 1997, Southern Metropolis Daily surpassed hundreds of other Chinese media with a daily circulation of 1.4 million copies and annual ad revenue of 1 billion yuan. Cheng was the main driving force of the achievement. Southern Metropolis wins over readers with its principles.

In his speech, Cheng said: "It is already 21st century. Chinese people's mouth can eat freely, but not speak freely. That's the reality in China.”

In this situation, Cheng saw the newspaper's position and its potential business opportunities. He said, "as long as your newspaper insists on having an independent, impartial, and objective position, not making and spreading lies, doing no evil for the authorities, not fooling the public,
and not covering up the truth, it will be the best and most successful newspaper in China!”

In 2003, Southern Metropolis was the first to report SARS in China. It also reported the case of Sun Zhigang, the student beaten to death by the police in a detention center for not carrying his ID. The case led to the abolishment of inhumane Custody Law. Southern Metropolis Daily's bold style has led to readers presenting their cases to its office.

Consequently, Cheng became the authorities' eyesore. In March 2004, he was arrest for "corruption", but Cheng insisted on his innocence. Five months later, he was acquitted due to "insufficient evidence". According to Hong Kong media, Cheng was accused of embezzling 100,000 yuan. It turned out to be his legitimate bonus.

Cheng was later forced to leave his newspapers. He is now the deputy director of Modern Media Group and the executive director of Asian Business Leaders. In his speech at University of Hong Kong, Cheng said, "How much evil deeds and injustice one must have committed to become so sensitive and vulnerable!”

China News senior journalist Gao Yu also received World Press Freedom Prize in 1997. Shortly before the Tiananmen massacre in 1989,she was detained by the authorities for 17 months.

Gao: "Until now, China doesn't have a press law. Freedom of press is not guaranteed. Why not legislate? Because it wants to limit the press freedom. CCP wants the media to be a tool for its dictatorship. This is absurd, as news should be reported objectively.

Cheng has absolutely no regrets over his choices.

He said, "Why do those absurd, anti-intellectual, unscrupulous and murderous press bans get implemented? We should unite and resist!”

Wen Jiabao's Moral Preaching to Real Estate Questioned (W/ English Sub)

Wen Jiabao's Moral Preaching to Real Estate Questioned

Prior to the CCP's “two meetings,” Premier Wen Jiabao appealed to real estate developers, saying they must have “moral blood.”
Wen's comment, shown on the web, is questioned.

On Feb 27, Wen was interviewed by official media Chinese Government net and Xinhua net. Net users questioned Wen on the high housing price.
As authorities have claimed to lower the price, but the price continues to rise.

Wen replied in the online chat: “Not everyone will own homes. ” He said on average, each person has 33 m2 of living space last year. About 80% of Chinese families own homes.

Wen's reply stirred up heated discussion.

Web writer “Mark Twin” said, according to Wen, 80% of 3-person families have 99 m2 homes. This contradicts with reality and the rising housing price.

A study by Academy of Social Sciences indicated, 85% of Chinese families are unable to buy homes.

In the online chat, Wen also issued a moral preaching to the real estate developers: “As members of the society, you have social responsibilities.
You must have moral blood.”

On Wen Jiabao's “moral demand,” Ge Weimin, a real estate developer, commented: Prior to the CCP's “two meetings,” Wen is trying to
appease the sentiment against the high housing price.

Well-known scholar Zhuang Daohe believes, rising housing price is a result of the land seizure. The government should not shirk responsibilities.

Zhuang: The government allows developers to make huge profits.
The government does not take responsibilities, but to throw the whip on others. It does not make sense morally.

Zhuang said, Wen Jiabao, as government official,is interfering with the housing market and harming economic freedom.

Zhuang: The government wants a rising housing price, as it can make high profit and collect much tax. Local officials make underhanded profit as well. The problem here is too much government control and not much of a free market.

RFI had a report on the afternoon of Feb 27, quoting two Xinhua articles on housing tax reform. By the evening, Xinhua had withdrawn the articles.

The Chinese constitution stipulates that land is owned by the state.
Housing tax implies private ownership of land.

Zhuang: If the state owns the land but taxes me on it, then the land should belong to me. If property tax continues, it means both the land and
the house are legally privatized. Then we must mend the constitution.

Zhuang said, the CCP is the largest land lord in China. They must have suddenly realized the contradiction with housing tax.
In order to protect their long-term interests, Xinhua News Agency withdrew the articles on housing tax.
