Taiwanese businessman, Chung Ting-pang, held his first press conference after his release on Saturday. His wife and daughter flanked him as he spoke to the press. More than thirty Taiwanese media attended.
Chung was detained on June 18th in Jiangxi province, and was finally released on Saturday. Appeals for his release came from Taiwan as well as from the international community, including legislators from the US.
[Chung Ting-pang, rescued Taiwan Falun Gong Practitioner]:
“Thank you everyone for the support you gave to my family and I during this period of time. You allowed my safe return. Thank you.”
The Taiwanese businessman described his detention as an “abduction,” and that he was under constant surveillance during his 54-day ordeal.
Chung is a practitioner of Falun Gong, a spiritual meditation practice. Falun Gong is brutally persecuted in Mainland China. He had been detained on charges of planning to break into a Chinese television signal in 2003. State-run Xinhua news agency reported that Chung confessed to the charge and repented.
However, when speaking to the press, Chung said that the confession was signed under duress.
[Chung Ting-pang, rescued Taiwan Falun Gong practitioner]:
“I used TV interception to let people in Mainland China know the truth about how Falun Gong is persecuted. I believe my action was right and just. For the so-called confession that I wrote in China, it was not written willingly, or by free choice.”
There have been several cases of Chinese Falun Gong practitioners tapping into state television to air programming about Falun Gong as a way to counter state media’s anti-Falun Gong propaganda campaign.
Chung emphasized the need to end the persecution in China.
[Chung Ting-pang, rescued Taiwan Falun Gong practitioner]:
“Rescue those Falun Gong practitioners who are detained, let them and other Mainland Chinese enjoy be able to know truth, and the freedom to believe and think. Let’s keep on appealing, keep on doing.”
Chung’s release occurred after the signing of two trade pacts on Thursday, one of which contains agreements that are supposed to guarantee the safety of Taiwanese businessmen in Mainland China.
