Gu Kailai’s trial will be held in Anhui Province, and this has raised eyebrows of China watchers.
Dr Li Tianxiao thinks this process highlights the injustice of the Chinese communist regime’s judicial system, because the trial is political rather than a judicial process.
[Dr Li Tianxiao, Politics Doctor from Columbia University]:
“An offsite trial is located and held according to the CCP’s political needs, it’s not decided by the case itself. What [the CCP] is trying to hide, highlight or emphasize is decided in accordance with the requirements of the CCP, for the purpose of achieving a certain political objective.”
“An offsite trial is located and held according to the CCP’s political needs, it’s not decided by the case itself. What [the CCP] is trying to hide, highlight or emphasize is decided in accordance with the requirements of the CCP, for the purpose of achieving a certain political objective.”
In fact, offsite trials are almost always used for high-level CCP officials. According to statistics released by “Oriental Law” in 2012, since 2001, 90% of the corruption cases involving high-level CCP officials have been handled offsite.
Another aspect of Gu Kailai’s trial is whether the Communist regime will allow a public hearing.
NTD Political commentator, Zhang Tianliang says, this case is not just an ordinary criminal homicide. It involves fierce infighting amongst the CCP. So, authorities are not likely to conduct a public hearing.
[Zhang Tianliang, Visiting Professor, George Mason University]:
“It’s impossible for (the Communist regime) to allow citizens to attend the trial and learn the true ins and outs of this case, including how the court will present the evidence, how she and her lawyer present her defense. So it will not be open to the public. Not allowing the public to attend itself means that there is some uncertainty about what will happen. And it’s suspicious. So I think it isn’t likely there will be a public hearing. A trial according to the law is not likely to take place, because the case itself was the result of a compromise within the Communist Party.”

Currently information about Gu’s case has been circulating on China’s internet like crazy, but searching key words like “Bo Xilai” and “Gu Kailai” or “Bo”, “Bogu”, “Kailai” and “Heywood” have all been blocked on micro blogs and forums, like the popular Sina Weibo, the Chinese equivalent to Twitter. It sends a clear but unspoken signal that Communist authorities don’t want people to talk about the case.
Before Beidaihe leadership meeting later this summer, CCP authorities have announced the trial and awkwardly identified her as “Bogu Kailai”. It’s an intentional way of linking her with her disgraced husband.
Political Analyst Heng He believes that the real problem lies not with the homicide case, but how to resolve the Political and Legislative Affairs System which Bo Xilai and Zhou Yongkang control.
[Political Analyst Heng He]:
“This is now the most troublesome problem the Communist Party’s highest authorities have. Now they are afraid that pulling up the PLAC would cause the CCP to collapse. It’s not a problem caused by Bo Xilai himself, actually all of Bo Xilai’s problems result from the Chinese Communist system. Bo’s problems are the Communist Party’s problems, not his personal issues. So they don’t dare to bring out Bo Xilai’s real crimes and accuse him that way “

The case is highly sensitive not only because of Bo’s seniority but because he had previously been selected as a possible candidate to the Communist party’s top political body in the once-in-a-decade power transition that will happen later this year. Gu’s trail is as blatantly political as it could possibly be.
