[Minghui.org] Bulgaria: Falun Dafa Welcomed at “Hello, Health!” Festival in Stara Zagora

In addition to providing a fun activity for children, the lotus workshop helps children learn about Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance. As they fold the origami, practitioners teach them the benefits of living according to these values by reading a children’s book written by practitioners titled A Lotus Tale.

(Minghui.org) The eighth “Hello, Health!” festival was held in Stara Zagora, known as the City of Linden Trees and Poets, on October 11 and 12, 2025. Falun Dafa (also known as Falun Gong) practitioners from different parts of Bulgaria participated in the event to introduce their spiritual practice to the public. The organizers of the festival issued a certificate of participation to Falun Dafa to express gratitude for its contribution to the health and unity of Bulgaria.

The festival was held on the restored ruins of the ancient forum Augusta Traiana, which began its construction during the reign of Marcus Aurelius, from 161 to 180 A.D. During his reign, he also constructed many straight streets, which earned the ancient city the nickname of “city of straight streets and linden trees.”

Many people were interested in Falun Dafa. Practitioners distributed leaflets to visitors and did the exercises near the workshop tent. On Sunday, the practitioners conducted a special exercise tutorial for a group of attendees who signed up in advance.

The booth with the information stand and banners was located in a high-traffic area, with a continuous flow of attendees on both days. A small table at the booth displayed Bulgarian copies of Falun Dafa books—Zhuan Falun and Falun Gong—along with other informational materials.

This is the third time this book has been presented at this festival, and some children recognized it and Falun Dafa’s values. Many of them were happy to see practitioners, exclaiming, “I have this book from last time, it’s very nice!”

The practitioners also organized a car tour through the streets of Burgas. The tour included 15 cars and passed slowly along all the central boulevards and streets of the seaside town. The tour was accompanied by a recording that told people about the ongoing persecution in China, as well as the strength and goodness that the Falun Dafa practice gives people.

(Minghui.org) Practitioners met in Burgas, the fourth largest city in Bulgaria, for their annual Falun Dafa Experience Sharing Conference and other events on September 7 and 8, 2024. They did the exercises, read the Falun Dafa teachings, and held activities to inform the public of their practice and the ongoing persecution in China.

Known as the city of birds and lakes, Burgas is a coastal city famous for its summer festivals, and even in early autumn, it’s a lively attraction for Bulgarians and tourists. Coinciding with the practitioners’ meeting was the gourmet festival, Fish and Wine, which brought many visitors to the city. The Sea Garden is Burgas’ most famous public park and home to a variety of greenery and sculptures. The roughly 2,000 acre park is located on the coast and draws much foot traffic.

On the mornings of September 7 and 8, practitioners did the Falun Dafa exercises in the park next to the Flora Expo Center. Many early risers and people doing their morning exercise routines stopped to watch as practitioners dressed in white and yellow performed smooth and slow movements to soothing music. Many accepted informational flyers to learn more about Falun Dafa.

Retired opera singer Diana was interested in Falun Dafa and did the exercises with practitioners. She said that it took a lot of resilience, but that she felt wonderful afterwards.

Desislava and Joseph live and work in Belgium and were vacationing in Bulgaria. Falun Dafa practitioner Zlatko showed them the exercises and told them about the event in Burgas. The couple decided to visit the seaside city and take the opportunity to do the exercises with practitioners.

During the two days, practitioners raised awareness of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) persecution and collected signatures. One petition, launched by Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting (DAFOH), calls on the G7+7 nations to stop the CCP’s 25-year-long persecution of Falun Dafa. The other condemns the CCP for its numerous human rights abuses.

Bulgarians Sign the Petitions

Practitioners set up an informational display in Clock Square, which is located in the center of Burgas, on the evening of September 7. The display included banners and a booth for signing the two petitions. Many passersby stopped and talked with them and said they were interested in learning the exercises.

Ana Mincheva signed the petitions and said she was aware of the repression that Dafa practitioners in China are being subjected to. She was pleased to have the opportunity to sign the petition and told practitioners that she did the exercises in Vienna nine years ago.

Samuel is from Burgas and visited the practitioners’ booth with his parents. He was very proud of his parents when they signed the petition ending the CCP and said, “How can one remain indifferent when hearing about these atrocities and crimes of the CCP? How can this cause not be supported?”

Asya Cheneva is a journalist at the Bulgarian National Radio and hosts the Hristo Botev program. She was curious about Falun Dafa and asked many questions. After she signed both petitions, she left her card with a practitioner and asked that they meet so that she could follow up on the story.

Galina lives in the Czech Republic, but was vacationing in her native city of Burgas. She signed the petition condemning the CCP after learning about the 25-year persecution of Falun Dafa in China. She also urged her friend to sign the petition, and her friend was interested in learning Falun Dafa.

A group of teenagers passed by the booth and banners that showed the various forms of violence that the CCP uses to persecute practitioners. It turned out that they were learning Chinese, but they had no idea about the dark side of China. They were horrified, and asked, “Is this true? How is this possible?” They asked for leaflets to take home so their parents could read them.

Car Tour Raising Awareness of the Persecution

The practitioners also organized a car tour through the streets of Burgas. The tour included 15 cars and passed slowly along all the central boulevards and streets of the seaside town. At bus stops and on sidewalks, people listened to the information and read what was written on the signs as the procession slowed or stopped. A young man took a video of the car tour.

A few practitioners stayed behind to continue the petition drive on the square near the clock tower. Many people spoke with them and signed the petitions.

Background: What Is Falun Dafa and Why Is the CCP Persecuting It?

Falun Dafa (also known as Falun Gong) was first introduced to the public by Mr. Li Hongzhi in Changchun, China, in 1992. The spiritual discipline is now practiced in over 100 countries and regions worldwide. Its teachings are based on the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance. Millions of people who have embraced the teachings and exercises have experienced improved health and well-being.

Jiang Zemin, former head of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), perceived the spiritual discipline’s growing popularity as a threat to the CCP’s atheistic ideology. On July 20, 1999, he issued an order to eradicate the practice.

Under Jiang’s personal direction, the CCP established the 610 Office, an extralegal security organization that has the power to override the police and judicial systems. Its sole function is to carry out the persecution of Falun Dafa.

Minghui.org has confirmed the deaths of thousands of practitioners as a result of the persecution over the past 25 years. However, the actual number is believed to be much higher, due to the difficulty in getting information out of China. Countless practitioners have been imprisoned and tortured for their faith.

There is concrete evidence that the CCP sanctions the harvesting of organs from detained practitioners, who are murdered to supply China’s organ transplant industry.

“If people respected and accepted others, everyone would benefit,” she said. “When I’m diligent and humble while assimilating to the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, people around me feel it. Zhuan Falun gently guides me to be patient and resolute, rational and compassionate.”

(Minghui.org) Zhuan Falun, the main teachings of Falun Dafa, was first published in Chinese in January 1995. Over the past 30 years, the book has been translated into about 50 languages and read by some 100 million people around the world.

The first Bulgarian language edition of Zhuan Falun was published in 2005, making Falun Dafa’s principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance available to all who speak Bulgarian. As more and more Bulgarians have take up the practice of Falun Dafa over the past 20 years, they say they are happy to find answers to their questions about life.

A Book about the Essence of Life

Katya Kalfova, 65, has a master’s degree in the study of the Bulgarian language (philology) and is now retired. She’s loved to read since she was a child, especially books about philosophy and spirituality. In the summer of 2014, her son told her a group of people meditated every day at a park in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. Out of curiosity, Katya went there to see what it was about. After she learned the exercises, a practitioner gave her a book with a blue cover.

“The practitioner suggested I read the book cover to cover,” Katya recalled. “She said if I didn’t understand something, I should just continue reading and finish the entire book.”

Katya began to read, but she forgot the practitioner’s advice and skipped around, reading paragraphs here and there. She then remembered what the practitioner said and realized this was not an ordinary book.

“I realized that if I didn’t read the book consistently, the contents would not be revealed to me,” she said. “I concentrated on reading, slowly and carefully.”

As she did, she suddenly had a realization, an answer to a question that had plagued her for many years. “Zhuan Falun answered this question: Why did Jesus say when you are slapped on one cheek, turn around and be slapped on the other cheek?” Katya said.

“I recall standing there for a very long time, stunned by the insight into the exchange of two substances—black (karma) and white (de or virtue). At that moment I knew, since this book clarified this topic, that answers to my other questions would be there.”

Katya began to read Zhuan Falun regularly after that. She also found her views of the world changing dramatically. “Sometimes I felt as if my skull was expanding to accommodate these new thoughts,” she said.

Excited by her discoveries, Katya was eager to share this book with more people. She organized an event in Bulgaria’s Capital Central Library a year later and introduced Falun Dafa and Zhuan Falun. Having practiced Falun Dafa for a decade, she said she’s gained more understandings from the book. “When I tell people about Zhuan Falun, I often say this is a book about the essence of life,” she explained.

“I read Zhuan Falun every day, and I feel I’m immersed in the vastness of life, the universe, and cultivation. Master explains about the universe and helps me see where I can do better,” Katya added. “I know Master cares about me and watches over me.”

A Newer and Better Version of Herself

Evelina Ivanova decided to practice Falun Dafa in 2014 when she was given a copy of Zhuan Falun.

After she received Zhuan Falun Evelina said she respected the book so much that she did not dare to open it. “The book’s blue cover illuminated the room, and I felt it was sacred,” she recalled.

One day, Evelina finally decided to read it. After she read Zhuan Falun for the first time, she felt like she could become a newer and better version of herself. “I didn’t know if or how I could achieve it, but I was sincerely convinced that the old me was no longer possible,” said Evelina. She felt very grateful and blessed.

Currently studying journalism at a university, she said she continues to live by the teachings in Zhuan Falun to help her improve her character. She is thankful that the book helped her through tough times in her life.

“Day after day, Zhuan Falun has become the most natural companion in my life. Not one day goes by that I don’t read it,” she said. “Almost 11 years have passed since I first read this book, which is so sacred to me. I am eternally grateful that, on the arduous path a cultivator has to walk, I am not alone. Through Zhuan Falun, Master Li is holding my hand like a father, guiding me on the path, the path home.”

Finding an Upright Path in a Chaotic World

Kerka Kuncheva said she always had a desire to seek higher truths, but when she was young, she seldom had time to stop and think.

Kerka began practicing Falun Dafa 8 years ago.

Caring for her young son motivated her to become selfless. She tried various ways to develop empathy but they did not help.

One night she had a vivid dream in which she was on a ship floundering in a storm. Suddenly, an invisible force began turning the ship and guided it to shore. She was pulled from the wreckage. Kerka felt this was a sign that something good was on the horizon.

The first time she read Zhuan Falun in 2017, Kerka felt everything was falling into place: how to balance caring for other people and herself, how to treat obstacles as opportunities for growth, and how to be more compassionate. She also discovered that being a good person helps one stay in harmony with the rest of the universe.

Articles in which cultivators share their understandings typically reflect an individual’s perception at a point in time based on their cultivation state, and they are offered in the spirit of enabling mutual elevation.
