Do You Hear the People Sing in Hong Kong? (Video)

This song is popular in Hong Kong at the moment, as protesters, mostly students, call for democracy.

It also went viral in the city earlier this year, ahead of the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre.

The little girl is singing in in Cantonese, and the tune is from Les Miserables song Do You Hear the People Sing?

Who Hasn’t Been Woken Up Yet?

I ask who dares say nothing?
I have sworn to guard our city.
I have the right and heart to take our destiny,
Who will keep silent?
Who hasn’t been woken up yet?
Listen to the freedom sounding,
Inspired by conscience to join freedom singing.
Why would a dream still be a dream, and still have to dream again?
To stand up for right over wrong, for truth over lies,
For future generations, we must all keep our eyes open and clear.
No one can make us silent as we watch Hong Kong turning red.
We have our hearts and hands to strive for.
Human is human, we have the right to choose, to decide our destiny.

Shen Yun’s Authentic Chinese Culture Treasured in Taiwan

He gushed, “I feel that as someone of the Chinese ethnicity, Shen Yun gave me a sense of pride for our ancient culture. It let us know more deeply Chinese history and culture. For people who did not come, you might have missed a wonderful opportunity. You should go see it if you know where Shen Yun is going.”

(Minghui.org) Shen Yun Performing Arts embarked on its month long tour in Taiwan at the Tainan Municipal Cultural Center on February 21, charming the locals with authentic Chinese culture via classical dance and music.
Shen Yun International Company put on five sold-out shows in Tainan from February 21 to 23, followed by another five full-house performances at the National Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall in Taipei from February 25 to 27. The month long tour will cover 37 shows in the seven largest cities of Taiwan.
Shen Yun performed in Taiwan for the eighth time. It has become one of the most celebrated annual performing arts events there.
Shen Yun: “Top International Artistic Performance” and a “Rarity”
Former Premier Yu Shyi-kun enjoys Shen Yun at the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall on February 25.
Yu Shyi-kun, former premier and one of the 2014 year-end New Taipei Special Municipality mayoral election hopefuls, attended the Shen Yun performance in Taipei on the evening of February 25.
Mr. Yu expressed that the dances performed by Shen Yun’s International Company were exquisite. He also praised Shen Yun’s successful demonstration of historic legends by synchronization of cultural arts and high-tech animated digital backdrops. He exclaimed, “It can be called a top international artistic performance.”
Gu Yaren, an oil painter that expresses oriental culture with Western painting skills, was impressed with the exquisite performance and described Shen Yun as a rarity.
“Shen Yun is a way to present traditional Chinese culture on stage. Chinese people talk about dance principles of hand gestures, eye contact, bearing, step movements, and a large-scale performance like Shen Yun presents such subtlety. For example, their costumes are well-made, and the Han couture presents a particular elegance.”
“The colors are also vibrant and varied, very special. In addition, traditional arts are connected with modern acoustic and visual effects. The performance should be recommended to many. If possible, everyone should come to the exceptional show,” he said.
“There’s a feeling of comfort, gentleness, and warmth. For some unknown reason, I feel a sense of serenity and comfort, as if I were purified,” he said.
Mr. Gu was very impressed with the opening program. He said, “From the opening scene, it is very impressive. We descend down through the cosmos; people are very small. I sense the vastness of the cosmos. The thinking pattern of many modern people is indeed too simplistic. If we can think outside the box and broaden our horizons, we will find that many things, like war, are unnecessary. In fact we should go back to the state of peacefulness.”
Mr. Gu concluded by describing Shen Yun as “Heaven on Earth.”
Perfect Blend of East and West, Yin and Yang
Rodney Winther, Professor of Music at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and Guest Professor for the music department of Shih Chien University in Taiwan
Rodney Winther, Professor of Music at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and Guest Professor for the music department of Shih Chien University in Taiwan, is also a world-class wind master and conductor. Dr. Winther attended the performance in Taipei on February 27. He was amazed by the beauty of Shen Yun and called it, “Amazing!”
He praised the composition and performance of Shen Yun’s music. The unique sounds of the eastern instruments accompanied by the western music highlighted the dance performance.
He also noticed that the Yin and Yang in Chinese culture do not simply show in the performance of the instruments, but also in Shen Yun’s dance. It makes people feel quiet and peaceful, but also has parts that invoke strong, masculine feelings.
Values Presented by Shen Yun Are Significant in Modern Society

Ms. Yang expressed her admiration for Shen Yun, “Shen Yun expressed ‘hope’, and ‘great compassion and love.’ There are many tribulations in the human world. But the gods are telling us that as long as we keep a compassionate thought, there will be hope.” She said, “I truly feel that Shen Yun is waking up people’s hearts and letting people know that they have a mission here.”
She added, “When you are touched by Shen Yun at this moment, your life has changed. Every day you will have joy, and your life will be enriched at this moment.”
Former Mayor of Tainan, Shi Zhiming, praised the cultural and spiritual treasure of Shen Yun

He said, “I felt my heart was cleansed and emptied, and I do not need to fight with others for everything again… The entire Chinese population has to see it. Shen Yun has created the greatest treasure for the mind.”
Professor at Taipei College of Technology, Wu Meili (left) thought watching Shen Yun was “a pursuit of happiness”
Wu Meili, a professor of life resources at Taipei College of Technology, thought watching Shen Yun was “a pursuit of happiness. I feel very lucky to have this kind of enjoyment.” She said, “The programs of Shen Yun are very closely tied. Every dancer is very skilled and top notch. Their movements are in unison and their techniques and postures are very beautiful. It shows the elegance of Chinese culture.”
Chen Liying, professor of Chung-Hua Institute for Economic Research
Chen Liying, professor of Chung-Hua Institute for Economic Research, admired how Shen Yun uses art to present five thousand years of Chinese civilization. She lauded the technique and skill of the dancers and costume designers, and believed that “it’s worthy of being promoted to the world.”

Department of Transportation official Cai Jiachun believed that Shen Yun is the pride of the Chinese people and also a presentation of five thousand years of Chinese culture

Mr. Cai expressed, “Shen Yun gave us a taste of five thousand years of Chinese history and culture. Whether it was the arrangement of the dances or the costume design, they all show the classical beauty of five thousand years of Chinese history and culture. Whether it was the dancers or singers, their sounds and images are still lingering in the air and I’m still excited.”
“Their singing, and the meaning and content of the songs brought me into their art and incorporated me into the lyrics. It was very peaceful, and I had a feeling of unity of the world.”
Starting on March 1, Shen Yun International Company will continue to perform in Kaohsiung, Keelung, Taichung City, Chiayi, and Taoyuan. For more information about Shen Yun, including all 2014 tour dates and locations, please visit ShenYunPerformingArts.org.

Toronto student, rights activist in the running for Miss World Canada

By Justina Reichel,  | April 3, 2013
?"
Miss World Canada contestant Anastasia Lin is one busy lady.
A film and television actress, model, human rights activist, and fulltime student at the University of Toronto, this year she has added competing in the Miss World Canada competition to her already packed schedule.
“It’s been really positive, a lot of challenges as well,” says Lin as she takes a break from writing a university paper to talk with The Epoch Times.
“During the last few years I feel I have matured a lot, and I think I’m able to take on a lot more pressure than before—because I’m seeing that I am really affecting people in a positive way.”
Determined to be “a voice for the voiceless,” Chinese-born Lin, 23, has dedicated her life to religious freedom, weaving this mission into everything she does.
“I think that freedom of belief is such an important thing—everybody needs to have the right to choose what they want to believe,” says Lin.
“Belief is such a strong thing. It is unlike anything else—once people have a belief it’s in their soul, you can’t just take it away from them. If someone tries to take that away it will be like emptying a person’s soul.”
In 2011 she was one of 10 youth leaders selected to meet with MP Bob Dechert, then parliamentary secretary to Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, in consultation for the establishment of Canada’s Office of Religious Freedom.
The following year, Lin was chosen as one of the 11 stakeholder representatives to meet with Baird himself about the Office of Religious Freedom. She advocated for greater freedoms on behalf of Tibetans, Falun Gong practitioners, Uyghurs, underground Christians and Catholics, and other groups persecuted in China.
She says attending the two roundtables made her feel that she really could be an effective voice for freedom of belief in her home country.
“So if I do win the competition I hope I can do a lot more things like that and to speak up for those people, and really use the title efficiently so I wouldn’t let all my supporters down, because I know that they supported me for a reason, and they supported me because they wanted me to be the voice for them or those who they care about.”

‘It always starts with your heart’

The slogan for the Miss World competition—the oldest surviving major international beauty pageant—is “Beauty with a Purpose.” The pageant has a history of humanitarianism and philanthropy, and has raised $500 million for children’s charities to date.
Miss World Canada chairman and CEO Ike Lalji says the winner of the competition will be an ambassador for Canada, with responsibilities such as getting involved in different humanitarian and philanthropic projects and helping approved charities.
“There are many values to being an ambassador and leader to represent Canada around the world, but I think it always starts with your heart,” says Lalji.
“You have to have the heart to help other people and then all the rest falls into place. We are looking for an ambassador that has the heart for helping people, and someone who’s very compassionate, humble—someone who would set a good example to the rest of the young people in our country.”
Lin was inspired to join the competition after meeting Nazanin Afshin-Jam, a former Miss World Canada and wife of Defence Minister Peter MacKay. Afshin-Jam is a tireless crusader and activist for human rights.
“When she spoke to me, I just felt like this would be a great platform to speak up for human rights,” says Lin, adding that the mission to serve others is what keeps her grounded.
“Sometimes I will feel like it’s quite overwhelming. I was not sure I could do everything, but then I think what kept me going was the fulfilling of the mission. I just feel like this is a responsibility, rather than something for myself.”
The Miss World Canada 2013 pageant will take place May 8 and 9 in Vancouver at the River Rock Casino Resort. The winner goes on to the Miss World competition to be held in Indonesia on Sept. 28.

Miss World Canada Contestant Speaks for the Oppressed

A university student, actress and human rights activist. At 23-years old, Chinese-born Anastasia Lin is taking on yet another challenge–Miss World Canada 2013—but it’s not just the title she’s after.
[Anastasia Lin, Contestant, Miss World Canada 2013]:
“My platform is religious freedom. I do want to speak on behalf of the people who don’t have this freedom.”
The student at the University of Toronto is living the motto of Miss World Canada: Beauty with a Purpose. In 2011, Lin was one of 11-stakeholder representatives to meet with Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird about Canada’s Office of Religious Freedom.
On the big screen, Lin has chosen films that highlight the importance of human rights.
[Anastasia Lin, Contestant, Miss World Canada 2013]:
“I think it’s during the process of making these movies. I find it’s very authentic. Those are the messages that I believe in, and being able to act them out and bring it to the audience, I feel it’s very profound.”
Anastasia Lin says this former Miss World Canada inspired her to consider the pageant.
But it was Anastasia’s own contact with a former prisoner of conscience that motivated her to enter.
[Anastasia Lin, Contestant, Miss World Canada 2013]:
“What happened to her was that I saw her a month after she came out of China. I can still see the bruises and damages that was done to her body due to the torture in the labor camp.”
That woman died several months later. Family members said she had been injected with toxic substances before she left China.
[Anastasia Lin, Contestant, Miss World Canada 2013]:
“That was heartbreaking for us, for the entire film crew. And that’s when I decided to join the competition, and I’ll be able to speak up for them.”
Lin admits she is nervous going up against the other contestants. But her goal going into the pageant is keeping her grounded.
[Anastasia Lin, Contestant, Miss World Canada 2013]:
“I know what I want to with this title. With this title we can help a lot of people who are suffering, who lack the freedoms that we enjoy in a free country, a free society. So I think once the judges see that, they will understand and give me the support. The support is not to me, it’s to the people who are suffering.”
Lin is currently coming third in the Miss World Canada People’s Choice online poll. The pageant will take place on May 8th and 9th in Vancouver, BC.
