A colleague recently asked me whether I thought the documents former Chongqing police chief Wang Lijun handed over at the U.S. Consulate in Chengdu included specific information about forced, live organ harvesting from Falun Gong (also known as Falun Dafa) practitioners.
I must admit, although I have read all kinds of speculation regarding the papers Wang Lijun gave to the U.S. Consulate officials, I had never pondered this issue. But faced with my colleague’s direct question, my immediate response was, yes!
Reflecting for a moment, I explained to him why I thought this to be very likely.
When he exited the U.S. Consulate on Feb. 7, Wang Lijun made a few statements, one of which was “yusiwangpo,” meaning, “The fish dies and the net breaks simultaneously.”
If the documents were only about Bo Xilai’s alleged corruption and treason, would Bo and Wang be targets of “yusiwangpo”—simultaneous destruction? No! Those types of crimes would not be big enough to merit such punishment.
For the United States, matters of embezzlement, who is in power, or who revolted, are all China’s internal affairs. Once the United States has established diplomatic relations with a nation and recognizes a country or a regime, it will generally not get involved in the internal affairs of that country. In such a case, Wang’s documents would not evoke his prediction of “yusiwangpo.”
However, if the papers Wang left behind at the consulate are related to organ harvesting, which is a crime against humanity, and if the United States made that information public, then this affair really would be a life-and-death issue, not only for Bo and Wang, but also for the Chinese communist regime.
If such a crime were indeed confirmed and understood by the world, communist China would be finished, without any moral foundation to stand on.
After this explanation, my colleague asked me why the U.S. government hasn’t publicized the information, if such documents do exist.
Looking at it from another angle, we have to ask, what would be the consequences if the United States made the announcement?
It would first of all mean that the United States recognized and accepted the evidence and was willing to endorse it. Furthermore, faced with such crimes against humanity, the United States would then be under moral obligation to take immediate actions against such crimes.
Is the U.S. government ready to do this? It is hard to say.
It could be aptly said that facing such a big issue, the United States has to take a cautious approach. It may think leaving the Chinese regime to deal with the issue through infighting is better and would save the United States a lot of trouble.
A Crime Too Terrible to Believe
Perhaps a government is similar to an individual. A few years ago, when the allegations of live organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners emerged, I myself didn’t want to believe it and dared not believe it. It was too terrible and outrageous.
At the same time, if I chose to believe the truth of the accusation, I would instantly be faced with a moral responsibility and with the question of what I should do to stop the flagrant crime. Therefore, choosing to disbelieve, and even to self-righteously accuse Falun Gong practitioners of spreading rumors, would have been much easier.
Many laymen have been as I initially was when confronted with this horror. However, some medical experts have not needed help to be convinced, as they were able to reach their own conclusions based on facts and evidence.
I have had the chance to come in contact with two eminent medical doctors who have spoken out opposing the forced, live organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners.
Professor Arthur Caplan, the director of the Bioethics Center at Pennsylvania University, who was named one of the 10 most influential and internationally famous scientists by “Discover” magazine, said in a recent interview that to find a liver within three weeks could only be done through killing on demand. Yet many hospitals in China, especially military hospitals, once advertised such short wait times in order to attract clients.
In the United States, Australia, and other countries, it generally takes many years, even more than 10 years, to find a suitable organ, Dr. Caplan said.
In a speech on March 13, at the College of Physicians in Philadelphia, “Particularly for transplant tourists, if you go to China, and you are going to get a liver transplant operation during the three weeks you are there, that means someone is going to schedule an execution, blood type and tissue type the potential executees, and have them ready to go before you need to leave.
I mean, you are not going to get a three-weeks wait time just waiting for someone to die in prison that matches your biology. You will have to find them and kill them whilst the tourist is still there. So that’s kill on demand.”
The other prominent doctor is Dr. Jacob Lavee, a member of the Advisory Board of Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting, and head of the transplant department at the Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer, Israel.
David Kilgour, the co-author of the book “Bloody Harvest,” and I visited Dr. Lavee in 2008. Dr. Lavee said he was aware of the serious problem in China even before the news about live organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners was made public.
One of his patients needed a heart transplant and had been on a waiting list for more than one year. One day this patient told Dr. Lavee that he had found a heart supply source in China and was scheduled for a transplant.
Dr. Lavee told us that it gave him the chills when he heard that. Since a donor heart can only survive outside the body for four or five hours, it meant the Chinese hospital was capable of “foreseeing” or “planning” when a donor heart would be available.
But how could this be possible when organs are donated following the donor’s natural death? How was it possible that the blood type of a donor, who had just died, perfectly matched that of the living recipient in need of a transplant?
With such firsthand experience, Dr. Lavee became deeply convinced of the authenticity of the subsequently released allegations that the Chinese communist regime is harvesting organs from Falun Gong practitioners.
Dr. Lavee has become an active advocate against forced organ harvesting. He also helped translate the “Report Into Allegations of Organ Harvesting of Falun Gong Practitioners in China,” by David Matas and David Kilgour, into Hebrew.
That report identified 41,500 transplantation operations that took place between 2000 and 2005 for which Falun Gong practitioners provided the most likely source of organs. More recently, Matas has estimated that 62,000 practitioners were victims of organ harvesting in the period from 2000 to 2008.
As a result of Dr. Lavee’s and other people’s efforts, since 2008, the Israeli government has stopped paying for organ transplant operations performed in China for Israeli citizens.
Seeking the People’s Forgiveness
My colleague nodded when hearing my explanations and said this was a golden opportunity for Party chief Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao.
“They should expose the truth about the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners and live organ harvesting to the public and bring those directly responsible to justice,” my colleague said. “If they do that, they will win the people’s hearts. Otherwise, they may not get another chance to fulfill their historic responsibility, and what’s more, they may be condemned by history.”
Wen Jiabao may already know this. At a recent press conference, he asked for the forgiveness and mercy of the Chinese people. Mercy is what someone guilty of a crime asks for. He might ask forgiveness for mistakes made during his tenure. But what crimes does he wish to be absolved of?
A change in the stance of the Chinese regime could be observed in the behavior of the Internet. Baidu recently unblocked several highly sensitive search terms related to the Falun Gong spiritual group, including “live organ harvesting,” and “Zhuan Falun” (the main book of Falun Gong teachings).
If the Internet blockade were completely removed, allowing the Chinese people unfettered access to the facts, the disintegration of the Chinese communist regime might just happen overnight and without a life-and-death struggle.
The Chinese people will still be here when the Communist Party is gone. But in a future China ruled by law, each person shall have to bear legal responsibility for what he or she has done in the past.
There is another saying Chinese people used to believe in: “The net of heaven has large meshes, but it lets nothing through.”
