The documentary "Free China" was well received as it debuted in New York last week.
[Janet Salazar, Permanent Representative, United Nations]:
"There's a need to show this documentary film in whatever media, whatever platform that could be, but specially in an international platform, such as probably the United Nations."
The film is directed by the award-winning director of “Tibet: Beyond Fear,” Michael Perlman. It's co-produced with Kean Wong of New Tang Dynasty Television.
The 50-minute film looks at the Chinese Communist Party's decade-long human rights violations of people who practice Falun Gong.
[Michael Perlman, Free China Film Director]:
"I thought I have to make a film that exposes these and that also shows there's a hope in this to free China, particularly through opening the Internet, through uncensored, free information, and the Global Internet Freedom Consortium being in the forefront of those efforts. We wanted to highlight that as well."
The film tells the true stories of two Falun Gong practitioners—one a mother and former CCP member, and the other a U.S. citizen and businessman. Both were persecuted and detained for their spiritual beliefs.
[Juan Rodriguez, Real Estate Broker]:
"Things connected to Falun Gong and things like that we're not aware of and I certainly wasn't. And it's been a mind-opening experience and I'm really appreciative of having the opportunity to come and see the film."
[John Kusumi, China Support Network Founder]:
"This film will change the hearts and minds of many people, and so I think this is an excellent step. It's an important film. It's one that the Chinese people should take in. And it's also one that the political leadership around the world should take in."
[Stefano Bravo, Entrepreneur]:
"I thought the film was very well done, very informative, very educational. I've learned that there's a total void of human rights in China and people don't have the ability of freedom of thought—something that we as Americans take for granted.
[Sarah Cook, Freedom House Senior Asia Research Analyst]:
"It's hard to explain everything in 50 minutes but to get people thinking about how connecting the dots a little bit, thinking about how labor-camp products connect to the things they may be buying in the supermarkets, if there're organ transplants issues, how they relate to them, and their families, and things like that."
The film also highlights how the re-emergence of traditional culture is helping to reshape China—and bring spiritual values back to Chinese society.
The film will screen on April 14th and 16th at Florida's 2012 Palm Beach International Film Festival.
