Gu Kailai Said to Have Named Zhou Yongkang as Coup Mastermind

Gu Kailai, the wife of an ousted Chinese politician, may have given evidence against her husband's ally in order to save herself from the death penalty.

Gu was arrested on April 10—the same day her husband Bo Xilai was sacked as Chongqing's Communist Party Secretary. Gu is likely to be convicted for the murder of British citizen and family friend Neil Heywood.

According to online news service Boxun, an anonymous source on Thursday said that Gu Kailai exposed a plot between Zhou Yongkang and Bo Xilai to stage a coup against upcoming leader Xi Jinping. Gu apparently named Zhou as the mastermind behind the coup, calling him the "bad egg" in the Communist Party's Politburo Standing Committee.

We have not yet been able to independently verify the report from Boxun. But Political analyst He Anquan believes it's likely that Gu Kailai did turn in evidence against Zhou Yongkang—because that's commonplace among communist officials trying to save themselves.

[He Anquan, Political Commentator]:
"So when they're at a political disadvantage, they will try to save their own lives. They do this through self-criticism and exposing others in exchange for leniency. In this system, people who lie down and roll over, as well as those wielding the sticks, basically have no morals or dignity left. There's nothing they won't do."

This is not the first time that Zhou Yongkang, who heads the powerful Political and Legislative Affairs Committee, is accused of plotting a coup. When former Chongqing police chief Wang Lijun fled to the US Consulate in Chengdu in February, he reportedly took with him documents containing evidence of a conspiracy between Zhou and Bo to stop current Vice Present Xi Jinping from becoming the regime's next leader during a power transfer later this year.

The alleged coup attempt is likely to direct what will happen next in what's now a very public power struggle between two Communist Party factions. Current leader Hu Jintao appears to have the upper hand against the hardliner faction. That hardliner faction includes Zhou Yongkang, Bo Xilai, and former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin, who's rumored to be in a coma.

Now with Bo Xilai and Jiang Zemin effectively out of the picture, analysts believe the stage is set for Zhou Yongkang to be taken down.

[Zhang Tianliang, NTD Senior China Analyst]:
"There's been information leaked online about Zhou Yongkang, with more serious allegations than Bo Xilai. For Zhou Yongkang, it now looks like the nail is in the coffin."
