Why Bo Xilai’s Case Is Not Merely a Criminal Affair

Internet rumors have it that Hu Jintao wanted Bo Xilai arrested in a criminal case for the sake of “maintaining stability.” My opinion is that it’s not possible to play down this story, and that a merely criminal case won’t end the Bo Xilai storm.
There are a few questionable things that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) can’t explain about this. Both Chinese and international media, as well as China experts, will keep asking the following questions until the answers are provided.
1. Xinhua News said that Wang Lijun provided information about the involvement of Bo and his wife, Gu Kailai, in the death of British businessman Neil Heywood. Then why did Wang bypass Zhou Yongkang and the organizational hierarchy and go directly to the U.S. Consulate? What does it have to do with Zhou Yongkang?
2. Who informed Bo Xilai that Wang Lijun went to the U.S. Consulate? How did Bo dare to surround the consulate with police vehicles? Who was behind Bo’s audacious move?
3. If it was merely a death case, why were characters like Kong Qingdong (a university professor who got himself into trouble by voicing his support for Bo and the “Chongqing model” of governance) and Sima Nan (a pro-Mao commentator whose blogs were shut down) detained and questioned? Why were pro-Mao websites known to support Bo, such as Utopia (wyzxsx.com), shut down?
4. The Party Central’s decision on handling Bo’s case was passed down to county and ministry level officials a day before it went public. Student and faculty Party members from universities in Beijing were summoned to an emergency meeting an hour before Bo’s announcement came out. Does a criminal case require such attention? Last time we saw this kind of communication was when Lin Biao was killed on Sept. 13, 1971. The method of communication itself shows that Bo’s case is coup related.
5. Wen Jiabao’s chief bodyguard, deputy director of the Central Guard Regiment, Li Runtian, was removed from his post because of his connection with Bo. Li Runtian provided sensitive information about the CCP’s inner circle, including Hu and Wen, to Bo. If Li Runtian was not Bo’s spy, why would Li continue to pass information to Bo even after Bo was ousted? Two points could be proved by this. First, Li Runtian believes someone inside the CCP inner circle was behind Bo and thus nothing would happen to him, so he continued to spy. Second, Bo must be plotting something big. Otherwise, he would not be paying Li to spy on the CCP inner circle for such a long time. Both points can easily be linked to the allegation of coup attempt by Bo Xilai and Zhou Yongkang.
6. The fact that Bo Xilai is under investigation shows that Bo’s backbone, Zhou Yongkang, has lost his power. Yet Bo’s case has implicated his wife, Gu Kailai, and his son, Bo Guagua. This will indeed lead to the fall of the entire Bo family. If Bo’s case was not coup-related, why would Party Central be so harsh to Bo’s family as to reopen the British businessman’s death case, without a request from Neil Heywood’s family?
7. The fact that Hu and Wen want Bo’s entire family gone has greatly scared Zhou Yongkang. As for Bo, in order to protect himself, Bo will expose everything about Zhou. The possibility of Zhou taking an extreme step is becoming larger and larger.
8. Wen Jiabao’s handling of Bo has not only silenced Bo forever (Bo will be thrown in jail and no longer be a threat), but also will silence Zhou. The fight between Wen and Zhou is a matter of life and death. It will be beneficial to Wen if more scandals about Bo are exposed. This will pave the way to bring Zhou Yongkang to justice.
Now if more news about Bo’s corruption, sexual scandals, or Bo’s collusion with Gu Kailai come out, the true focus of Bo’s case will be weakened. We should pay close attention to the Bo-Zhou coup attempt rumors and see if Wen Jiabao can follow through with his promise. Wen said at his last press conference: “An answer must be given to the people and the results of the investigation should be able to withstand the test of the law and the history.”
