15,000 Give Support to Persecuted Family - Defying the Chinese Regime?

Why did more than 15,000 people in northeast China express support for a family that been the target of a state-led smear campaign? What is allowing the Chinese public to come to realize that practitioners of the Falun Gong spiritual practice are not who the Communist Party says they are? Is this part of a growing trend, and how will this impact the rule of the Chinese regime?
Background:
In May, a young woman from Heilongjiang province appealed to the public to help urge authorities to investigate the death of her father. Qin Rongqian’s dad, Qin Yueming, was a Falun Gong practitioner – one of an estimate 70 million people who have been vilified by the Communist Party since 1999. He died in prison in February 2011. Although prison officials claimed the death was from natural causes – his family suspected otherwise, given the many signs of abuse that were present on his body.
Qin, her mother, and her younger sister then appealed to local authorities to investigate to find out the true cause of death. These requests were denied, and the mother and younger sister were sent to a labor camp for their efforts. In late May this year, out of desperation, Qin appealed to locals on the street – asking them to sign a petition to call for an investigation.
Within two weeks, 15,000 people responded. Their signatures not only extended support for Qin and her family, more importantly, they signify a growing defiance against the actions of the ruling Communist Party
