(Clearwisdom.net) Ms. Yao Caiwei’s husband, Mr. Zhang Tao, was tortured to death in custody at the end of 2002 (see http://www.clearwisdom.net/emh/articles/2003/4/18/34648.html). Her 22 year-old daughter Ms. Zhang Jianhui was detained, her face beaten until she was disfigured, and then sentenced to ten years of imprisonment. Ms. Yao appeared to be a paraplegic. Her limbs were numb, she could not speak clearly, she had blurry vision, and she had difficulty taking care of herself. She died on May 18, 2010.

Ms. Yao Caiwei

On May 19, 2010, Ms. Yao’s family arrived at Heilongjiang Province Women’s Prison and asked that her daughter, Ms. Zhang Jianhui, be allowed to see her mother for the last time, but Office Manager Tao turned down their request. On May 21, 2010, her family once again asked that Ms. Yao’s daughter be permitted to join the funeral, but prison officials gave orders to not even allow them through the gate.

Mr. Zhang Tao
Ms. Zhang Jianhui, still detained

The main person responsible is Zhang Guofu, the deputy director of Shuangcheng City Police Department, and also Mr. Zhang Tao’s cousin (their fathers are brothers). Zhang Guofu’s mind has been twisted by Communist Party (CCP) brainwashing, and he does not recognize his cousin as a relative in order to be promoted. He arrested his own cousin, Mr. Zhang Tao, and his cousin’s wife, younger sister, and daughter.

Ms. Yao and her husband retired early from the Shuangcheng City Cement Factory. After they began to practice Falun Gong in January 1996, their sicknesses disappeared. They sold mountain area products for a living and lived in a small but tidy house.

After the persecution began in 1999, Ms. Yao, her husband, and her daughter went to Beijing to appeal multiple times, and Zhang Guofu focused on them as targets for mistreatment. He instructed officers from the Zhanqian Police Station to watch their house and tried to arrested their then 19-year-old daughter.

Ms. Yao was arrested and detained twice. The first time was on January 19, 2000, after she came back from appealing in Beijing. She was detained in the Shuangcheng City Second Detention Center until May 23, 2000. She went to Beijing to appeal for the second time on July 1, 2000, and was detained in the Shuangcheng City Detention center from July 4 until September 29, 2000.

Ms. Yao’s husband, Mr. Zhang Tao, was detained three times. The first time was on August 5, 1999, after he came back from appealing in Beijing. He was detained in the Shuangcheng City Second Detention Center for 18 days, until September 2, 1999. Officers from the Zhanqian Police Station arrested Mr. Zhang at his home at the beginning of November 1999, placed him in custody for 54 hours in the station, then detained him in the Second Detention Center until the end of November 1999. The second time he went to Beijing to appeal was on the 2000 Chinese New Year (February 5, 2000). He was detained on February 8, 2000, in the Second Detention Center until he was transferred to Yimianpo Forced Labor Camp in Shangzhi City on May 30, 2000, and served a nine-month term.

Ms. Yao’s daughter, Ms. Zhang Jianhui, went to Beijing to appeal on January 18, 2000. She was arrested and detained in the Second Detention Center from January 22 until March 28, 2000. She was directly taken to the Zhanqian Community Brainwashing Center and imprisoned there for seven days.

Right after the 2001 Chinese New Year, CCTV fabricated the Tiananmen Self-Immolation. In order to clarify the truth to those that had been deceived, Ms. Yao’s family distributed fliers that explained the actual events. At around 10 p.m. on February 23, 2001, the local police arrested Ms. Yao and her daughter and detained Ms. Yao in the Second Detention Center and her daughter in the brainwashing center.

By October 2001, Ms. Yao’s family could not remain in their house peacefully any longer. They had to sell their house for less than its value and go live out of town.

On November 10, 2001, Mr. Zhang had just gotten off the bus in Harbin City when he was arrested by several plainclothes police. He was in custody in the Harbin City Police Department and tortured on an iron chair for 12 entire days, causing his buttocks to fester and his limbs to swell. He was unable to stand up after being released. The police did not extract any information from him, but they detained him in Yaziquan Prison for four months, until March 2002, then sentenced him to three years of forced labor to be served in Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp in Harbin City.

Mr. Zhang was so brutally tortured in Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp that he could not walk or sleep, and he experienced extreme internal pain. The Harbin City Second Hospital checked his gallbladder, kidneys, and pancreas and found that all had been injured. He retained fluid in his abdomen that prevented him from urinating normally. After only 15 days, the camp allowed him to be bailed out by his older brother for medical treatment in Shuangcheng City.

But only nine days after being released on April 19, 2002, seven to eight Shuangcheng City 610 Office agents stormed into the couple’s newly rented house, ransacked the place, and dragged the couple into a police vehicle without letting them dress warmly. The police put them in custody in the Shuangcheng City Police Department, tortured them, and put Mr. Zhang on the iron chair for 24 hours.

The police detained Mr. Zhang for 24 days in the Second Detention Center, starting on April 20, 2002. They brutally beat him on May 13, 2002, then took him back to the Changlinzi Forced Labor Camp. The guards locked him in a small cell (2) for going on a hunger strike at the end of July 2002. On July 30, 2002, the camp administrators called Mr. Zhang’s brother and told him that Mr. Zhang Tao had died of “heart disease.” Ms. Yao and their daughter were in custody, and her son was nowhere to be found. Mr. Zhang’s brother and sister-in-law went to dress him on August 2, 2002, and saw that his neck was swollen very badly and covered with purple bruises. One arm was obviously fractured.

After being arrested on April 19, 2002, Ms. Yao was sentenced to three years of forced labor. The camp wouldn’t accept her her due to her poor physical condition but took her to a brainwashing center held in the Wanjia Forced Labor Camp. Warden Wang told her that her husband had died. She asked to see her husband’s body, but Changlinzi Camp had cremated him in the Huangshanzuizi Crematory without letting her see him.

Their daughter, Ms. Zhang Jianhui, was also arrested on April 19, 2002 ,and detained. The guards beat her brutally, disfiguring her face, and there were injuries all over her body. She was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment and has been detained in the Harbin City Women’s Prison since January 2003.

Ms. Yao’s husband had been tortured to death in custody, her daughter was serving a long sentence, and her son, a non-practitioner, was nowhere to be found. Ms. Yao collapsed. After being released, her life was very hard. She cried all day, unable to speak clearly, her vision blurred, her arms and legs useless. She was simply unable to take care of herself.

In the winter of 2008, her family helped her visit her daughter in prison. The mother and daughter cried either side of the glass, unable to say a word. Even the other visiting families were heartbroken when they learned their tragic story. Her family helped her see the prison director, but their request for Ms. Zhang Jianhui’s release to take care of her mother was coldly denied.

After returning home, Ms. Yao’s condition worsened, and she often just stared into space. If anyone mentioned her husband or daughter, she would appear to cry, but no tears flowed from her dried out eyes. She had a convulsion on May 18, 2010, and died. Her family cremated her on May 22 and buried her ashes with her husband, according to tradition.

Note:

(1) Small cell – The detainee is locked up in a very small cell individually. The guards handcuff practitioners behind their backs in a fixed position, so that they can neither move nor lie down. The small cell is very damp and no sunshine comes in. There is a bucket in the cell instead of a toilet. Only half of a regular meal is served to those in a small cell during the daytime. During the night, the rats take over. The stench in the small cell is so bad that it is difficult to breathe.

Editor’s Note: Dear readers, do you know that Falun Dafa, originally from China, is currently practiced by people in over 100 countries? But in China, since Jul. 20, 1999, Falun Gong is defamed, slandered and persecuted due to the Chinese Communist Party’s fear of Falun Gong’s rapidly growing popularity. Jiang Zemin, former head of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), perceived the spiritual discipline’s growing popularity as a threat to the CCP’s atheistic ideology.

[Minghui.org] From an Angry Young Man to a Peaceful Art Gallery Manager

Sept. 27, 2024 | By Minghui correspondent Li Jia in Taipei, Taiwan

After he began practicing, he realized that instead of pursuing material things people should strive to achieve a higher spiritual level and become better people. “My mentality of constantly complaining is gone. I understand there’s no reason to resent anyone. Gains and losses, and unfair things don’t happen without reason. There’s a cause and effect relationship to everything we experience in our lives, and my troubles were created by my own karma,” he said.

(Minghui.org) Jianwu was a rebellious young man who always challenged authority. He felt textbooks were old fashioned and dull, but he was smart and was admitted to a renowned college where he majored in English.

In the field of literature and art, people are expected to have differing opinions. Jianwu studied literary theories and literary criticism, and read books about existentialism. Going with the trend in society, Jianwu developed a habit of criticizing people and things.

As a result, he tended to go to extremes and often complained about his hardships. How could such a young man change his life?

A Troubled Youth

Jianwu graduated with an English major, and many people would have worked for a foreign firm or become an English teacher. But these “ordinary” jobs did not appeal to him. He thought if he worked hard he would have a huge income. So he tried all kinds of jobs including renovating old houses, running an art studio, gallery administration, and translating documents. He also worked temporary construction jobs and sold eggs at a farmer’s market. But everything turned into a dead end.

Considering himself a smart person, Jianwu could not understand why he kept failing. So he tried harder and even moved to Australia. After three months and despite his good English, he could not find a job. When he worked at a restaurant, his boss became angry with him for no apparent reason and he was fired.

After working hard Jianwu still hadn’t made any money. He was puzzled and wondered why his good college education did not lead to a successful career. Ten years passed, but he still hadn’t achieved any of his goals.

Years later he realized he was influenced by socialism. “I now realize that socialism is rooted in communism. It’s disguised on the surface such as ‘equal rights’ but there’s cause-effect karmic relationship. ‘Equal rights’ implies that one does not need to repay one’s karmic debts,” he said.

Surviving a Car Accident

Many friends suggested that Jianwu look for a better job, but he refused to listen, “I was like a hedgehog. Whenever someone told me something, I would respond with sharp words, as if I was the only person in the world who was right.”

After he returned to Taiwan, Jianwu had difficulty finding a job. When they saw his hot temper and bad attitude no one wanted to hire him. Even his friends stopped contacting him.

After trying many times, Jianwu finally found a contract job working for the government. It was at a remote location and he had to drive nearly 70 kilometers each way every day, even during bad weather. In addition, working for the government had lots of pressure, unlike the freedom in the art industry. Jianwu became depressed—he would be fine, and a minute later he was irritated. After an argument with his girlfriend, the doctor prescribed medicine for depression.

The huge pressure, lack of sleep, and medication often made Jianwu drowsy when he drove. He had a car accident and hit a tree. Although his car was totaled, he miraculously only had minor bruises.

Stepping on the Cultivation Path

These setbacks made Jianwu wonder if he had some problems. “I felt these adversities could be a reminder from the divine that I should have done better,” he said. When he was ready to change, an opportunity came.

At that time Falun Dafa was already practiced in over 100 countries and there were many practitioners in Taiwan. But because he was cynical, Jianwu never paid attention. Jianwu joined an online reading club, and a friend often talked with him about the universe, Buddhism, and he later mentioned Falun Dafa. “Each of us read Zhuan Falun (Falun Dafa’s main teachings) on our own at home. I didn’t understand some parts, but I understood later when I continuing reading.”

For example, one time Jianwu thought about becoming a fortune teller after practicing Falun Dafa. He was surprised to find an answer for this in another chapter. He felt what Master Li (Falun Dafa’s founder) said was very good and he wanted to memorize the words. He thought about highlighting the sentences he liked with a pen, but the book was so clean that he thought perhaps he shouldn’t write anything in it. He then read the following two days later,

“Some people just cannot improve their enlightenment quality. They casually make marks in my book. Those of our cultivators with the celestial eye open can each see that this book looks very colorful, golden, and shiny. Each word bears the image of my fashen. If I were to tell lies, I would be deceiving everyone. That mark you made looks very dark. How do you dare to make marks in it so casually?” (Lecture Nine, Zhuan Falun)

After he read Zhuan Falun, Jianwu said many of his questions about life were answered. “It was as if many empty spots deep in my soul were filled, leading me to a more productive life,” he said. He started practicing Falun Dafa.

Jianwu does the second set of Falun Dafa exercises.

After he began practicing, Jianwu realized that in the past he only pursued money and fame, and thought he would succeed if he worked hard. When he didn’t get what he wanted, he complained that his fate was unfair. As a result, his life did not go smoothly, and it felt like the road became narrower and narrower.

Jianwu’s old friends are impressed by his positive changes. He became kind, calm, and able to listen to what others said. “After I began practicing I was able to face setbacks calmly and treat them as a test. Before I would get irritated when I encountered difficulties,” he explained.

Following Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance at Work

After he began practicing Falun Dafa, Jianwu’s job problem unexpectedly ended. In the past, he tried every means to find a job, but now job opportunities came to him.

Jianwu is the gallery association’s manager, responsible for media relations and marketing. He applies Falun Dafa’s principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance at work. When problems suddenly arise, he handles them calmly. “It’s not because I think others were wrong and then I tolerate it; I really feel that others aren’t wrong. After I began to practice, my heart’s capacity expanded and I have a different understanding of many things. If I go by the previous standards, I might think that this person or this thing is very bad, but now I no longer have these thoughts,” he said.

Jianwu said he now always maintains a compassionate and kind opinion of everyone.

As his character improves, Jianwu is increasingly able to see the essence of things and grasp the key points. He’s also able to take on extra work. His performance at work keeps improving and his career is stable.

“Because we practice kindness and are easygoing, many people are willing to work with us. Through cultivation, we can see the core of things and know what to do to achieve the best results, and our work performance will improve,” Jianwu continued. “The better I get, the more stable my life will be, and the better I can perform and learn at work. This is something I couldn’t imagine in my previous troubled life.”

Artistic Aesthetics Change

Jianwu’s aesthetics also changed, and he now appreciates beauty and art. “Working in this field, I noticed many modern artworks depict the pain of life. After practicing cultivation, I realized that art should present beauty and kindness,” he said.

Because many people have challenging lives, he feels they should examine themselves so they can improve. “After reading the history of art, I found that the great artistic masterpieces handed down from generation to generation express the beauty of divinity or the beauty of humanity,” he explained.

Jianwu also felt that there is great beauty in the natural world. “Heaven and earth were made by the Creator. That kind of beauty is everywhere, and there is no need to ask for anything. You can see that the sky is beautiful after a storm,” he added.

He found that his perception of things before and after practice was completely different. “When I was in that angry state before, when it rained, I would think it was raining again and the weather was not good. After practicing, when it rained, instead I feel the air is fresh after the rain,” Jianwu explained. “My perception changed after I began practicing. My life became better after I began practicing.

“Cultivation can help the body and mind return to the best state, so that a person can face life positively,” he continued. “If you don’t want to practice, no one will force you. But if you truly practice, what you get is incomparable to anything in the world.”
