This appeal letter from 300 villagers in northern Hebei Province is causing a stir in the top levels of the Chinese Communist Party leadership, according to a source close to the ruling circle.
The letter is from Fuzhenzhou villagers. They are calling on authorities to free a teacher who’s been detained since February for his beliefs.
42-year-old Wang Xiaodong practices Falun Gong—a spiritual discipline the Chinese regime has been persecuting since 1999. The former Chinese regime leader Jiang Zemin has been orchestrating the extensive crackdown. The group appeal letter comes at a time when Jiang’s faction is locked in intense infighting with that of current leaders, Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao.
A source who has links with the senior ranks of the Communist Party says the letter, issued in April, has made its way to leadership circle. The source has asked to remain anonymous.

“Before I got to Beijing to use my channels to make suggestions about how to resolve this issue, the letter has already been read internally. What I can reveal is that there are loud calls within the Party, and most of these are for a peaceful resolution, and that Jiang Zemin’s policy to crackdown on Falun Gong was wrong. It hurt social harmony and the rights of up to 100 million people.”
Falun Gong was widely popular throughout China since it was introduced in 1992. By 1999, official estimates put the number of practitioners at around 70 to 100 million people. The scale of the practice and its roots in traditional Chinese culture alarmed Communist leader Jiang Zemin. On July 20, 1999 Jiang launched a campaign to stamp out Falun Gong.
For 13 years, most ordinary Chinese citizens have refrained from speaking out against the persecution. More recently though, opposing voices are being heard, like this group appeal letter.

“In the past week, scholars and elites in Beijing have been talking about [Falun Gong], without exception and divergence in opinion, we’re going to support Falun Gong, and we view it as a healthy force that can push for the progress of the Chinese society.”
NTD’s analysts have commented that the issue of Falun Gong is at the center of the Chinese regime’s current factional infighting. They say Wen Jiabao and Hu Jintao have not actively participated in the persecution, and are looking to expose Jiang and his accomplices to escape blame for the persecution.
