TAOYUAN, Taiwan—The Taiwanese government has failed to initiate any real action to secure the return of Taiwanese citizen and Falun Gong practitioner Chung Ting-pang who was arrested by Chinese authorities while on a trip to the mainland.
On the evening of July 11, Chung’s daughter Chung Ai and Chung’s younger sister departed for Washington D.C. where they will visit the U.S. Department of State in hopes of convincing the U.S. Embassy in Beijing to help them ensure Chung’s safety, according to Theresa Chu, lawyer and spokesperson for the legal team working on Chung’s case. “We call on members of the international community to provide their greatest effort in bringing Chung Ting-pang back to Taiwan as soon as possible,” she said.
Chung Ai will also be speaking at the large-scale rally being held by Falun Gong practitioners at the U.S. Capitol to protest the Chinese regime’s persecution. She will appeal to members of congress and human rights organizations.
On July 10, congressman and founder of the Taiwan Caucus in the House of Representatives Dana Rohrabacher drafted a letter to Taiwan president Ma Ying-jeou urging him to “speak out strongly against the detention of Mr. Chung and against all religious and political persecution in mainland China.” He also criticized the Taiwanese government for remaining silent on Chung’s case.
Chu agreed with Rep. Rohrabacher, noting that if the Ma administration fails to support these efforts to rescue Chung, it will bring shame to Taiwan’s reputation for freedom and human rights.
Chung Ai, who is a recent graduate of National Taiwan University, shares the same alma mater with the Taiwan president. She expressed great disappointment with the president’s lack of response to her father’s case.
