An elderly man’s broken shoes tell the story of his long, heart-wrenching journey. He is 91 years old and has lost his hearing. He and his wife patiently sit on the ground holding a sign, calling for the release of their daughter-in-law. The man looks sad and helpless. His wife is 81, and blind. The sign states their sad appeal, “Release our daughter-in-law.”

The elderly couple is from Goukouzi Village, Shuangshanzi Town, Qinglong County, Hebei Province. Their daughter-in-law, Cui Aijun, was taken from her home by local police for practicing Falun Gong on December 11, 2012. She has been detained since.
Fifty-six hundred local residents jointly signed a petition, calling for the authorities to release her. However, Qinglong County Domestic Security Division officials insisted on bringing Ms. Cui to court.
Parents-in-law driven away for requesting for Ms. Cui’s release
Ms. Cui’s mother-in-law cries for her every day. Her father-in-law waits at the door, looking for her, hoping she has been released. Again and again, the elderly man and his blind wife slowly made their way to the Communist regime’s offices to request the release of their daughter-in-law. Again and again, the regime’s officials and police officers lied to them and drove them away.
The elderly couple depends on their daughter-in-law and their lives are desperate without her to help them. They know their daughter-in-law is innocent and has been wronged by the regime. They once again went to the government offices, hoping the officials would listen to them. After all, the county government is called the “People’s Government,” as shown in the picture.
Mistreated in detention
Ms. Cui Aijun is being held in the No.1 Detention Center of Qinghuangdao. She is forced to do slave labor for 15 hours a day. If she can’t finish the heavy workload, she is punished.
One of the torture methods she has been subjected to is sleep deprivation. On top of her already heavy workload, she has to clean the restroom and wash the floor. She is only given a small steamed bun for each meal.
She has now lost so much weight that she looks like a bag of bones. Her legs are swollen and she can’t walk straight.
