MUSIC: Remembering Wong Ka Kui, Japanese students singing “Under a Vast Sky”

“Under a Vast Sky” (海阔天空) was a 1993 hit by Hong Kong band—Beyond.
The song was composed by the band’s lead vocalist and guitarist, Wong Ka Kui. He expressed his disappointment with Hong Kong’s music industry in the 1990s, through “Under a Vast Sky”.

Wong Ka Kui

Sadly, the talented Wong Ka Kui died at the age of 31 on 30 June 1993, after a tragic accident. On 24 June 1993, he fell accidentally off a three-meter stage during the rehearsal of a game show for Fuji Television in Tokyo, Japan.
“Under a Vast Sky”—Here’s part of the lyrics:
“Forgive me for embracing freedom in my life

But also fear of falling down some day

To give up one’s hope, it isn’t for hard for anyone

It would be fine if there’s only you and me”
In 2014, “Under a Vast Sky” has become the unofficial anthem during Hong Kong’s umbrella movement, as the protesters could relate to the song’s quest for freedom in the lyrics.
“We were all in awe of [the late] Wong Ka-kui’s immense talents. Full of energy and creativity, he was the soul of the band,” said Beyond’s ex-member (1986-1988), Lau Chi Yuen told the South China Morning Post.

Wong Ka Kui
Wong Ka Kui

A nice Cantonese song composed by Beyond Wong Ka Kui

Beyond Wong Ka Kui -海闊天空 "Under a Vast Sky" w/ Eng subtitle

'Forgive me for being wild and yearning for freedom'....

Repeat *# Oh~ Yeah~

Repeat #

Oh~ Yeah~

Oh~ Yeah~

Beyond - AMANI, shout out for peace!

Written by Beyond's leading vocalist Wong Ka-Kui (With English Subtitles)

Beyond "Amani" was written by Wong Ka Kui during their trip to Africa in 1991. The lyrics of the song are in Chinese interspersed with words from the Swahili language. The title of the song, Amani means peace in Swahili language. As suggested by the title, the song is about world peace and the plight of war-ravaged countries in Africa. The song is a plea for peace to the next generation. “NAKUPENDA NAKUPENDA WEWE” means “We love you” “TUNE TAKE WE WE” means “We need you”.

Wong Ka-Kui黃家駒(June 10, 1962 - June 30, 1993) was a Hong Kong composer, songwriter, musician and singer. He died on 30 June 1993 after falling off a 3 meter platform while filming a gameshow for Fuji Television in Japan.

Beyond -Amani :

非洲语,“AMANI" 是和平的意思;“NAKUPENDA NAKUPENDA WEWE" 就是 “我们爱你” “TUNE TAKE WE WE" 是 “我们需要你” 的意思。

AMANI

AMANI NAKUPENDA NAKUPENDA WE WE

AMANI NAKUPENDA NAKUPENDA WE WE

AMANI NAKUPENDA NAKUPENDA WE WE

(NAKUPENDA WE WE)

AMANI NAKUPENDA NAKUPENDA WE WE

AMANI NAKUPENDA NAKUPENDA WE WE

(NAKUPENDA WE WE)

AMANI NAKUPENDA NAKUPENDA WE WE

AMANI NAKUPENDA NAKUPENDA WE WE

(NAKUPENDA WE WE)

AMANI NAKUPENDA NAKUPENDA WE WE

AMANI NAKUPENDA NAKUPENDA WE WE

AMANI NAKUPENDA NAKUPENDA WE WE

AMANI (AMANI) NAKUPENDA NAKUPENDA WE WE

(Woo~~~~~)

AMANI (AMANI) NAKUPENDA NAKUPENDA WE WE

AMANI (AMANI) NAKUPENDA NAKUPENDA WE WE

(NAKUPENDA WE WE)

AMANI (AMANI) NAKUPENDA NAKUPENDA WE WE

Koma Wong Ka Kui

Recently, I found this great musician - Wong Ka Kui 黄家駒 of Hong Kong rock band Beyond. Too bad, he died in 1993 after falling off from a stage while filming in Japan. So pitiful, he was only 31 years old then. I wonder why talented genius always had short life. He composed great music...I think his talent must be a GIFT from God. Sadly, it remains a LEGEND...

Wong Ka-Kui (June 10, 1962 - June 30, 1993) was a Hong Kong composer, songwriter, musician and singer. He was the lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and the founder of the Hong Kong rock band Beyond.

He composed more than 90 percent of the songs for Beyond and wrote a few award-winning lyrics. Ka-Kui is remembered for his musical talents as well as his unique and powerful voice that is able to convey a number of emotions. His songs are often addressing humanity and social issues such as injustice, war and peace, racism, poverty, family and pursuit of dream.

Wong Ka-Kui had a great influence on at least a generation of Chinese because of his outlook on life and the spirit of never giving up. He devoted his entire life to achieve change in the Hong Kong music industry and also tried to make a difference in the world.

While filming a gameshow for Fuji Television in Japan on June 24, 1993, Wong Ka-Kui fell off a 3 meter platform head first, and was hospitalized immediately. He died on 30 June 1993 after spending several days in coma due to internal bleeding from head injuries.

His funeral in Hong Kong congested the traffic really badly.

And many celebrities sent him off. For those who have never heard of Beyond or their music, lets just say.. the impact of Ka Kui's death in 1993 to the HK music scene was some what like Lennon's death.

Beyond "Glorious Age" (光輝歲月), is about racism and the struggle of Nelson Mandela in South Africa.

This song was composed by Beyond lead singer - Wong Ka Kui (June 10, 1962 - June 30, 1993).
He died on 30 June 1993 after falling off a 3 meter platform while filming a gameshow for Fuji Television in Japan.
