Next to South Korea, where today's date, November 11, marks a unique Korean celebration. The chocolate cookie stick, called a pepero (pron: peh peh row) has it's own national day. It was first started by students who linked the shape of pepero to the 1's in November 11. It's now grown, with it's meaning similar to valentines day, and is now celebrated across the country. Our South Korea correspondent has the story.

[James Greig, English Teacher]:
"A pepero is a chocolaty candy thing, crunchy and tasty."

People in South Korea have celebrated Pepero Day since the 1990's, a tribute to the chocolate covered cookie stick.

[Noh Anna, Student]:
"It's on the 11th of November because a pepero looks like a 1."

[Lee Mijin]:
"This year is known as Millennium Pepero Day, because it's 11th of November, 2011, so there are 6 1's......so that's why it makes it special this year."

But it's not all rose-colored glasses for the chocolate stick.

[Jeong Yurim, Student]:
"It's too commercial, and the 11th of November is also Farmers Day. So Farmer's Day has been overshadows by Pepero Day, and now it's become less well known. "

And Pepero Day has really taken off.

[Her Sungmi]:
"It first started in the 1990's in Gyeongsang Province. On the 11th of November, girls started giving peperos to each other, and it grew from there."

[Noh Anna, Student]:
"You give peperos to your friends. "

[Shin Sujin, University Student]:
"It's a nice way of showing someone you like them, it's a cute and special day. But it can be a depressing day for singles."

And what can you do with it?

[Noh Anna, Student]:
"Eat it!"

[James Grieg, English Teacher]:
"You eat the chocolate off ..."

[Noh Anna, Student]:
"You do a pepero kiss with your friends."
