BUENOS AIRES—Shen Yun Performing Arts dazzled audiences at Teatro Ópera Citi for the second night of its 8-show run in Buenos Aires on Friday evening.
For Cristina Alberó, a famous Argentine actress, Shen Yun offered audiences an experience beyond just seeing skillful classical Chinese dance and music.
“I think what can’t be described [about the show] is the surprise,” said Ms. Alberó.
People in the west, explained Ms. Alberó, hold their jobs too dear to them and see them as their ultimate goal.
“I think there is some kind of subversion of values, that leads to the issue of excessive work and people putting material gain over spiritual wealth.”
New York-based Shen Yun has a mission to restore and revive Chinese traditional culture, a deeply spiritual ancient culture with values of benevolence, honour, propriety, and wisdom, among others, according to the Shen Yun website. It is the portrayal of these values and spirituality that pleasantly surprised Alberó.
“They are showing the physical, the spiritual, and the intellectual,” Alberó said about Shen Yun.
“I’m fundamentally interested, because I believe it [values portrayed in the show] should be fostered in the world, everything about spiritual messages, the messages about values, basic values to human coexistance and above all need to lift [the spirit], to put the spirit ahead of everything.”
She said she found it very interesting how Shen Yun portrays Chinese culture in a show staged in the west, and said the values portrayed by Shen Yun improve the quality of life in the Western World.

Combination of Arts

Ms. Alberó, who has been a well known actress since the late 1970s, said Shen Yun impressed her not just because of its “aesthetic beauty,” but also because of the way it masterfully combines dance, music, colourful costumes, and beautiful scenes on the stage.
“They are integrating different disciplines. It’s taking from the discipline of music, singing, and also dance,” she said.
She also commended the use of the hi-tech digital backdrops portraying different scenes ranging from celestial paradises to blossoming landscapes.
Ms. Alberó also praised the Shen Yun orchestra, and noted that it is not very common to see dances accompanied by live music these days.
“I think is obviously a show to recommend,” Ms. Alberó said.
New York-based Shen Yun has three companies that tour the world each year on a mission to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture.
