In my previous life, I was a 7-month-old fetus from Zengjia County, Ankang City, Shaanxi Province. But before I could be born, I was forcibly aborted in Zhenping Hospital , Shaanxi Province on the command of the Zhenping County Family Planning Committee at 3:40 p.m on June 2, 2012
Now that my soul has ascended to heaven, and I heard that my abortion had stirred a heated public debate, I would like to let the public know through this letter that there’s no need to worry about me. On the contrary, I feel it is more fortunate that I was not born.
The authorities control everything from our property to our thoughts, and of course our unborn children as well. Births must also be planned, and when something goes against the plans of the state it must of course be stopped. So a 7-month fetus that falls outside of the plans of the authorities will be doomed to be aborted as well. What he faces is induced labor instead of birth into this world. So, to all these benevolent citizens, please don’t feel sad for me. Even though my parents had planned for me to come into this world, unfortunately the state did not, and so I have no right to be born.
My friends, please don’t feel sad for me, because my abortion is a “great contribution” to our country’s cause. Our country has 1.3 billion people, and it is said that our natural resources cannot maintain such a large population. The Tibetan Bodhisattva once said, “If I do not go to hell, then who will?” So let my abortion be a contribution to the state’s family planning policies.
China’s one-child policy has been in place for more than 30 years. In 2009, the 30th anniversary of the policy, China’s elderly population hit 8.3 percent, surpassing the international average of 7.5 percent. Given China’s low birth rate, our “demographic bonus” is quickly vanishing, and labor shortages are starting to emerge. Experts have predicted that it will no longer be possible to rein in China’s falling population or to save the nation’s economy from harm.
But our country’s leaders never discuss these issues during their legislative meetings, and we still have to listen to them. Whatever they say is always correct. Isn’t that right?
Some people have felt injustice for me, but even if we want to have families, we still have to do it according to law. According to the Population and Family Planning Law, any family that exceeds the allowed number of children “is liable to reimburse the social costs.”
But nowhere was it stated that authorities were granted the right to enforce abortions. Some of the officials involved said that all they did was “repeatedly persuade her”, but they probably never gave her the option to refuse anyway.
And even so, she could consider herself to be well-treated if “repeated persuasion” was all they did. But at the very least, they are not as bad as the authorities in some parts of China that send both mothers and fetuses to heaven together.
If you think that family planning should be made illegal, then it shouldn’t be the only thing made illegal. How about the deaths of those who tried to defend their homes against forced demolitions by the authorities?
The “black jails” that illegally detain citizens trying to lodge appeals?
The unwarranted violence that the municipal police frequently use against street vendors? All of these should then be considered illegal as well.
My friends and fellow citizens, please don’t feel sorry for my death, I’m actually leading a happy life in heaven. But the ones who really need to worry are those who were born into the human world.
After you are born into this world, milk powder containing melamine awaits you. The rice you eat will be poisoned with cadmium, the food you eat will be cooked in “gutter oil” and the school buses you ride in will be dangerously over-crowded.
When you take your college entrance examinations you will hire a substitute to take your exam for you, and when you own a house, you have to be on your guard against forced demolitions by municipal administrative bureau staff.
And when you are dead, you can only rest in your leased cemetery plot for 20 years. The only thing you can blame all this on, is the fact that you live in China.
