On the eve of this year’s 23rd anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, Chinese author Wu Renhua published an exposé on the Chinese government’s violent suppression of student protesters in 1989. The book, titled “The Inside Story of the Bloody Cleansing at Tiananmen Square,” also contains a comprehensive list of the military personnel who participated in the massacre.
The list is the outcome of over 20 years of research. In an interview with Radio Free Asia, Wu said the 67th Army were the primary troops mobilized for the massacre.
The original list, published in Wu’s book, carried 2,705 names. That number has since increased, however, to over 3,000 as additional research revealed that more soldiers were involved.
Wu said, “In the process of sorting out and publishing the names of the 19 army units that were involved in the incident, I kept getting more and more names provided by others. Therefore, the actual number of military personnel I have saved in my files exceed 3,000.”
Zheng Cunzhu, a democracy advocate who survived the massacre and currently lives in the United States, expressed that many of the military personnel who carried out the killing on June 4 were promoted to higher ranks afterwards. Zheng added that he believes these people should all stand trial for their crimes.
Zheng told NTD Television reporters, “These military personnel who executed the massacre all have guilty consciences. I think they should all be investigated for their crimes and brought to justice by the court.”
Since 2008, Jinan City of Shandong Province has hosted annual rallies to mourn victims of the massacre. Yet, every year the rally has met with interference, and its participants are often harassed by local authorities Sun Wenguang, a retired professor from Shandong University, believes that the Chinese regime is trying to make its citizens forget the incident.
Professor Sun told NTD Television, “That year on June 4th, soldiers were shooting at an unarmed civilian crowd, slaughtering them and running tanks over them. In the past 23 years, the truth was never written into school textbooks, nor published by media publications in China. Nowadays, university students are aware of the term ‘June 4th,’ but they have no idea what actually transpired that day.”
Sun said the only way to prevent political disasters from happening again and ensuring that the truth about the past is never forgotten, is to faithfully record history for future posterity.
