Prominent Chinese human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng is still prison in China’s Xinjiang region. Gao was put under probation for five years for “subversion”, defending clients who the communist regime is persecuting. He frequently “disappeared” and was tortured by authorities. Just before the probation was up in December last year, Gao was sentenced to 3 years prison. His wife, Geng He, and two children fled to the United States in March 2009.
During this time, Geng He has faced much heartache. She’s published three open letters to her husband Gao, expressing her concern and worry. In her most recent letter, she wistfully mentions the blind Chinese activist, Chen Guangcheng’s escape from China.
She told Gao, “After thousands of difficulties, (Chen) Guangcheng and his family have arrived to the US on May 19.”
She wrote, “Without hearing your voice and without any information of you, I am distraught every day and my heart is moved.”
Geng He remembers when working in Gao’s office in the past, they often received phone calls from the Bar Association, telling him to come in for questioning. They told Gao he needed to get approval to take on “sensitive” cases.

Sun Wenguang, a professor from Shandong University, supports Gao’s practice.

Sun Wenguang has been engaged in human rights’ activities for a long time, as well.
In 2005, Sun Wenguang and Gao Zhisheng went to Shandong to visit Chen Guangcheng, but were beaten by security forces.
Sun Wenguang said that since June 4th is approaching, he is being monitored every day, even during this phone interview.
