Madam President,
In March of 2006 I received a strange phone call. Two sources told me a horrifying story: that in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province, a hospital and a labor camp were working together to kill living people for their organs. The organs would be sold for tens of thousands of U.S. dollars.
My colleagues and I determined to investigate the allegations.
In most countries, organ donation is voluntary. The waiting time for a kidney is four or five years. But in China in 2006, it was one week. The operations were conducted in secret. Organ recipients do not find out where the organ came from. They do not even see a signature from the transplant doctor.
In our investigation we found that prisoners, detained in labor camps and jails, were almost the sole source of transplant organs in China. The vast majority were practitioners of Falun Gong, a Chinese spiritual practice, Politcal dissidents, And minority Uygher.
The persecution of Falun Gong began in 1999. Between 2000 and 2006,67,000 transplants were recorded. In the six years from 1994 to 1999, only 18,500 transplants were recorded. But in 2005 alone there were around 20,000. More than 40,000 organs can not be explained. The most new organs were from Falun Gong.
Millions of Falun Gong practitioners are detained in labor camps. We found that military hospitals worked with the camps to blood match Falun Gong donors, then killed them for their organs.
Lawyers, medical experts, and journalists have investigated this and come to the same conclusions.
Before all the evidence was as clear as it is now, I faced a dilemma. We did not have hard evidence – yet we knew what was happening. How to report it? My son, who was eight at the time, sensed I was worried. He said: Your worries would be nothing if you could help save one life.
The killing of innocents for their organs is an attack on the dignity of humankind and the principles of human civilization.
Tens of thousands of lives rely on the decisions made by all of you here. The United Nations Human Rights Council must do all it can to carry out a thorough investigation of this matter, put an end to these practices, and seek punishment for the perpetrators.
Please make the correct choice, because only then can we look into our children’s eyes, and tell them that we have done our very best to make this earth a better place for humankind to live.
