It seems a foregone conclusion that Wang Lijun will be found guilty next week of the four charges laid against. The former police chief of Chongqing is accused of defection, bending the law for personal gains, abuse of power and bribe taking. Analysts say, however, that there is more to Wang’s crimes.
Human rights groups have alleged that Wang has been involved in the Chinese regime’s persecution of the Falun Gong spiritual practice, in particular, the illegal harvesting of their organs for transplant.
Senior China analyst, Heng He, says there have been other accusations against him, too.
[Heng He, NTD Senior China Analyst]:
“First, Wang Lijun set up the On-Site Psychology Research Center in Jinzhou, and oversaw thousands of organ transplants which is likely linked to the live organ harvesting of Falun Gong practitioners. Secondly, during his crack down on crime in Chongqing, he’s suspected of using torture, even to death, resulting in many tragice cases. Thirdly, a witness has alleged that Wang raped several female officers under his rank. Any of these three allegations are more serious than the current ones, but none have been mentioned.”
After Wang fled to a US Consulate in February, rumors surfaced that he had given details of organ harvesting to US officials. He also reportedly gave details about a plot by Bo Xilai and Chinese security chief Zhou Yongkang to disrupt the succession plans of upcoming leader Xi Jinping.
Publicly, Wang’s case has only been tied to the murder committed by Gu Kailai, the wife of disgraced official Bo Xilai.
That changed this week, after state-run Xinhua News Agency linked Bo to Wang’s case for the first time. Xinhua also said Wang, quote, “exposed leads concerning major criminal offenses by others”. China columnist Xiao Xiaoqiang says this paves the way for future actions.
[Xia Xiaoqiang, Columnist]:
“This gives room for interpretation for how Bo Xilai will be dealt with. Could “others” include Zhou Yongkang as well? Could “major criminal offenses” by others mean political coup, or even live organ harvesting? In particular, the Chinese Communist Party’s pillaging of organs of Falun Gong practitioners is getting more international attention. The CCP may not be able to hide it much longer.
China analysts have told NTD previously that the Communist Party’s persecution of Falun Gong is central to the political infighting unveiled by Wang. China’s former leader Jiang Zemin launched the crackdown in 1999, a move that current leaders Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao have not supported. Both Bo Xilai and Zhou Yongkang have been named as being actively involved in the persecution.
