The 3rd Jasmine Revolution: Foreign Journalists are Targets
Chinese authorities have braced up for the third wave of Jasmine Revolution called on by Chinese netizens. The foreign reporters present became police targets. At least 15 reporters were detained.
In Shanghai, a designated location for the “revolution”, the police detained at least 15 foreign reporters. Among the journalists attempting to report the event, Janis Vougioukas is from German news magazine Stern.
Vougioukas observed that the demonstration was small, but the authorities were pretty nervous.
Vougioukas told Deutsche Welle in an interview, authorities had hundreds of police and plainclothes checking the IDs of all foreigners at the scene.
The 15 foreign reporters were taken to a basement, where they were detained for nearly three hours. The police warned them to abide by Chinese laws.
On March 3, at Foreign Ministry's press conference, spokesperson Jiang Yu warned foreign reporters again “not to use the law as an excuse,” claiming “no law can protect” them.
Vougioukas believes that the spokesperson's words imply that in China, what the laws are not important. All it matters is how the authorities would act.
A western journalist told Radio Free Asia, the police threatened that if he went to gathering places, his visa application would be rejected next year.
The recent online messages calling upon students in 100 colleges to join in “group strolls” every Sunday have made the schools and the government nervous.
Hong Kongs Apply Daily reported, since March 5, many colleges have been ordered to close their doors. Students are not allowed to go out at will
or get close to places of gathering. Security guards and helicopters monitor campuses. Beijing temporarily closed the subway stop where many colleges are located. Students said “colleges are just like prisons”.
The media continue to emphasize stability maintenance. Beijing Daily published 2 editorials on the topic. Beijing government spokesperson Wang Hui called the Middle Eastern democratic movements “chaos”, saying Jasmine Revolution would never occur in China. Shanghai party newspaper Liberation Daily's commentary “People Set Their Minds to Stability,” called upon the people to maintain the social stability.
