Tibetan poet Tsering Woeser is scheduled to receive an award for her work this Thursday. It was supposed to be a small award ceremony at the Dutch Ambassador to China’s residence in Beijing. But it seems the Chinese regime has other ideas. On Wednesday, security agents came to her apartment and said they would not let her attend the ceremony. In a video sent to the Associate Press, Woeser sits among her stack of books, while she says four or five guards lurk outside, keeping in virtual house arrest. Woeser was selected for the award for her outspoken writings about the bleak conditions Tibetans face at the hands of the Chinese regime. In recent weeks she’s posted several pictures and stories on her blog about the string of recent self-immolations in Tibet and the crackdown that followed. Security is tightening is Beijing as the National People’s Congress begins a new session. It’s also a month of important anniversaries for Tibet, including the 1959 Tibetan Uprising resulting in the exile of the Dalai Lama.
