Brainwashing for children. That’s what some in Hong Kong have been calling the new National Education Curriculum. Back in July, Hong Kong’s leaders made it mandatory starting this fall semester. Tens of thousands of angry residents took to the streets—calling it pro-communist propaganda for kids. But the latest round of protests and hunger strikes ended yesterday (Sunday), after Hong Kong leader C.Y. Leung announced that the curriculum would no longer be required—that schools could choose whether to use it or not. But is this a victory for protesters? And what effect did the protests have in mainland China, where talk about the protests was both trending, and censored?
