A 52-year-old woman, Ms. Zhang Fengxia (張鳳霞) from Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province, died on Aug. 17, just seven days after being arrested for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual practice based on the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since 1999, according to Weiquanwang, a website which aggregates reports of persecution from grassroots activists and religious believers in China.
Her death marks yet another tragic case of a practitioner dying in custody under suspicious circumstances, echoing numerous similar incidents documented across China over the past two decades.
Arrest and sudden death
On Aug.11, Ms. Zhang was arrested at home by officers from the Huizhan Police Station after a police trap cut her electricity. She was taken to the Daqing City Second Detention Center and charged with “undermining law enforcement,” a common pretext used to criminalize Falun Gong practitioners.
A week later, on Aug. 17, her family received an urgent call from the detention center saying she was “dying.” When they arrived at the hospital, Ms. Zhang was already unconscious, with multiple tubes and an oxygen mask. Doctors said she suffered a ruptured cerebral aneurysm and had lost a large amount of blood. Despite emergency treatment, she died soon after.
According to Minghui.org, More than 20 officers were present at the hospital, where police pressured the family to sign a “conditional bail” and a “release” form to avoid responsibility. The family refused to acknowledge the claim that she was being released while in the ICU. Ms. Zhang’s body was cremated three days later, and officials insisted she died of natural causes. Her family has since demanded an investigation and accountability, but authorities have refused, highlighting the ongoing impunity surrounding deaths of Falun Gong practitioners in custody.
Previous harassment
Ms. Zhang had been arrested in 2022 for distributing Falun Gong materials and at that time police confiscated her books and computer. Following her release on bail, she was fired from her job at Dongfeng Middle School and later harassed repeatedly by the same officers. To avoid persecution, she lived away from home for over a year. Upon returning in early 2025, she continued to face pressure to renounce her faith, which she firmly refused, telling police she had committed no crime by practicing Falun Gong.
Ms. Zhang had begun practicing Falun Gong in 1998 after recovering from serious illness, and she was known for her kindness and courage. Her sudden death in custody, following years of persecution, has once again drawn attention to the ongoing abuses against Falun Gong practitioners in China.

Editor’s Note: Dear readers, do you know that Falun Dafa, originally from China, is currently practiced by people in over 100 countries? But in China, since Jul. 20, 1999, Falun Gong is defamed, slandered and persecuted due to the Chinese Communist Party’s fear of Falun Gong’s rapidly growing popularity. Jiang Zemin, former head of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), perceived the spiritual discipline’s growing popularity as a threat to the CCP’s atheistic ideology.
