Fearless: Chinese Rights Lawyer Gao Zhisheng’s Letter to the World

By James Burke
AP_860715958197-1-676x450
Prominent Chinese human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng is one of the bravest men on the planet.
Yes that’s a big call but this is one Nobel Peace Prize nominee who has been to hell and back and it hasn’t broken his spirit. And now Gao wants to say what happened.
There’s not enough room on this page for me to go through what this man has had to endure over the past nine or so years, plus I’d prefer not to get in the way of you reading his letter which is further below.
What I will write is just to help you put his letter, which was written on September 12, into context and assist you to understand what the 51-year-old lawyer is referring to. Some background of sorts.
Described as the ‘conscience of China’, Gao was well known for helping Chinese Christians and any citizen petitioners who had genuine grievances against the state.
But the main reason why Gao was targeted by the communist authorities was his unyielding defense of practitioners of the persecuted Falun Gong meditation practice.
Gao himself is a Christian.
Gao Zhisheng, a lawyer, now himself persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party for defending the Falun Gong. His wife Geng He, daughter and son had escaped, through Thailand, and now reside in the United States.
In his recent letter below Gao refers to three open letters that he wrote years ago to Communist Party leaders calling on them to end the persecution, detailing awful cases of torture used against Falun Gong practitioners. He also wrote an open letter to the U.S. Congress and publicly announced his membership withdrawal from the Chinese Communist Party in 2005.
After years of harassment, which included the authorities closing down his law business, Gao was disappeared by state security and later imprisoned for “inciting subversion of state power.” In prison he endured years of solitary confinement, maltreatment and bouts of torture.
In 2009 his wife and two children fled China and they now live in the U.S.
Just over a year ago, Gao was released from jail a shell of a man and he was* being held under house arrest in Shaanxi province, north-western China.
The following is his translated letter which was published by the Epoch Times.
*Editor’s note: It has just been learnt that Chinese authorities have once again disappeared Gao after the letter below was first published (September 22) and after the Associated Press published (September 23) an interview they recorded with him in March.
Gao Zhisheng’s Letter
Yesterday, when I was looking through the old cabinet my mother left, I came across the bookLawyer Gao Zhisheng’s Collected Works. I sat down and read in one sitting the three letters I wrote to the Chinese communist bandit leaders. Only after having gone through the same torturous experience myself do I now know how catastrophic, deeply disturbing, and shocking it is.
Wei Xiuling, a Falun Gong practitioner from Shandong Province, was “killed,” resuscitated, and then finally killed again. Reading her story again, the misery is simply suffocating. Reading how her lower half was naked when she died, I start quaking again in my heart. Or the story of how when Liu Boyang and his mother Wang Shouhui from Changchun were both tortured to death, they could hear each other’s blood-curdling cries.
It’s been a decade since I wrote these investigation notes, but the murderers are still “leading comrades,” still strutting around with their heads high and their bellies out, long having forgotten about the bloody debt that will follow them forever. This is the achievement of China Central Television, Global TimesLiberation Army Daily, and other wicked media have wrought, going about their shameful work numbing the Chinese people. The words I wrote to Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao in the end failed to awaken the numbed souls of this world, and the sinister regime continues its crafty, evil conduct, the same as it always has.
Right around me there are still shameless agents of the regime, hanging about day and night, earnestly carrying out the wishes of their master of forever keeping China in a dark, intoxicating dream. This is what United Nations General-Secretary Ban Ki-moon, who attended the Party’s military parade recently, doesn’t see, and doesn’t want to see.
Ban Ki-moon, Russian leader Vladimir Putin, and Korean leader Park Geun-hye are like visitors from other planets, turning a deaf ear to the human rights disaster in China going on around them. They don’t react in the least when the thugs who invited them carry out a brutal crackdown on expression, thought, freedom of belief, or when they thwart constitutional development, education reform, health reform, judicial independence, or derail attempts to spread universal civilized values. Their numbness to all this should be exposed.
This is all a disgrace to the civilized world.
The dark, criminal elements of the Communist Party have sprung forth again around China, disappearing, torturing, and extracting confessions from hundreds of human rights lawyers. The campaign is another open crime against humanity, another evil for the historical record, just like the Tiananmen June 4 massacre, or the persecution of Falun Gong, or the brutal, continuous practice of demolishing the homes of ordinary people and evicting them.
This is all a disgrace to the civilized world. I don’t know what Ban Ki-moon is thinking inside when he does business with these people who blatantly commit crimes against humanity. During the military parade of this gang of bandits, petitioners and dissidents around the country were suppressed and put under strict control; restaurants in Beijing demanded to see their diners’ identification cards; 10 days before the parade, the post office ceased all package deliveries. All of this was done to make a Potemkin Village for the likes of Ban Ki-moon, to give the gang of scoundrels with guilty consciences a chance to congratulate each other.
I can now make public that in mid-August I successfully delivered overseas two manuscripts: One is titled China Stands Up in 2017; the other is not yet named—both will be available within a year. There is much worth reading in those books, so I won’t say more about them today.
I want to solemnly assure you all that all the crimes against humanity taking place in China today will without exception be judged. At the end of 2017, a special tribunal will be set up for this—the details of this are described in the forthcoming books.
After reading the three open letters, I felt the natural urge to pen the above notes to memorialize the noble martyrs who have passed away—they’re the glory and the last energy of our nation, evidence that our people still have promise and grandeur. Commemorating their lives is proof that our consciences have not been entirely destroyed.
Gao Zhisheng, September 12, 2015

Daughters of Chinese Dissidents Call for Meeting With Obama

The White House says the president doesn’t have time. Congressman Chris Smith asks him to skip a hole or two of golf

WASHINGTON—With the vocal support of four congressmen, five daughters of political prisoners in China made a plea to the Chinese communist regime to release their fathers from prison. At a press conference, which was held at “House Triangle” outside the Capitol Building on Sept. 17, the group expressed a strong wish to meet with President Obama. They hope that he would raise their fathers’ cases with General Secretary of the Communist Party, Xi Jinping, when the two attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Council (APEC) summit, in Beijing this November.

Congressman Chris Smith (R-N.J.), who organized the press conference, said that because private diplomacy has not produced results, he wants the administration to take a new, tougher approach, and for the president to find his voice on human rights in China.

“The repression [in China] is pervasive, unrelenting, and absolutely unnecessary—as those detained love their nation and want China to reflect its highest ideals,” said Smith, who has held numerous congressional hearings on human rights in China. He held a hearing concerning the daughters’ appeal to Beijing, Dec. 5, 2013, when they gave formal testimony.

Smith made an impassioned plea to the president, pointing out that Obama has two daughters, and Smith has two daughters, and so both understand in a personal way what the Chinese daughters must be suffering. Smith wrote President Obama, asking him to meet with the families of imprisoned dissidents. But after six months, the only response he got from the White House was the president didn’t have time.

Smith suggested that he make time by skipping a hole or two of golf.

Smith was joined at the news conference by three of his colleagues: Congressmen Frank Wolf (R-Va.), Robert Pittenger (R-N.C.) and Steve Stockman (R-Texas). Also speaking was the Chinese blind lawyer and civil rights activist Chen Guangcheng.

Chen said through a translator, “The freedom for China is really in the long-term interest of America.”

‘What else can I do?’

The daughter of Gao Zhisheng, Grace Geng, spoke of her father’s physical and mental condition upon his release in August after five years of isolation and imprisonment. The picture she painted of her father is a far cry from the articulate, established lawyer, who pro bono represented persecuted groups such as Falun Gong practitioners and peasants who were robbed of their land.

Geng described the solitary confinement that her father was subjected to. “In the past five years, my dad was imprisoned on a cage-like dark cell ward… My dad told me that the law allows no more than 15 days imprisonment in such a cell ward, to prevent causing serious physical and mental damage to the prisoner. But my dad was thrown in such a cell for years. The cell had no windows, no roommates, no sunlight, no fresh air at all.”

Geng said that her father is physically impaired and has difficulty walking. He badly needs to see a dentist. His teeth are mostly loose, and he is unable to chew. He is in constant pain. She said he speaks with a lisp and respond slowly or not at all.

Geng said that her father is not really free. Twice a day, in the morning and afternoon, the police visit for two hours, and harass him and the family members he is staying with.

She begs the President and Secretary of State John Kerry to help her father reunite with the family in the United States, where he can get his illnesses treated.

“As an ordinary, powerless young girl, what else can I do?”

Congressman Smith said, “Gao’s medical parole and reunion with his family should be a top priority of the Obama Administration.”

Daughter Denied Visit With Father
Ti-Anna Wang said her father Wang Bingzhang has been imprisoned for 11 years of a life sentence, and is serving it in solitary confinement. Mr. Wang, who was the founder of the overseas Chinese democracy movement and started the dissident magazine China Spring, was kidnapped while in Vietnam and taken to China where he was subject to a sham trial. Now 67 years-old, his daughter is very worried about his health.

“The past decade of confinement has taken an irreversible toll on his physical and mental health,” she said. She hasn’t been able to visit her father in the last five years because the Chinese regime refuses to issue her a visa. Her speaking out for his release has resulted in this punishment, she said.
Esther Huixin Zhang spoke on behalf of her father Zhang Shaojie, a Christian pastor, who was sentenced to 12 years in July. He was not allowed to see his lawyer for 101 days. A first he was charged with disturbing the public order, and since then, the charges have changed a few times. Before he was arrested, her father and the family had been followed. In their household and friends, very large surveillance cameras were installed, she said.

The daughters of attorney Chang Boyang and Liu Xianbin spoke at the news conference. Friends of Tenzin Delek and Lobsang Tsering also spoke.

More Assertive Policy
Ti-Anna Wang said the best hope the five daughters have for their fathers’ release is for the U.S. government, including President Obama, “to intervene more assertively on our behalves.”

According to Rep. Smith, the way forward for the United States to become more assertive in encouraging respect for human rights in China is to support H.R. 5379, the Human Rights Protection Act of 2014, which he introduced. He said it would allow “the President to deny entry visa and freeze the assets of any Chinese official who tortures and abuses freedom-loving dissidents like Gao Zhisheng.”

Correction: The name of the daughter of Zhang Shaojie, the Christian pastor, is Esther Huixin Zhang, not Rachel Zhang Huixin.

Abuse Leaves Chinese Rights Lawyer Gao Zhisheng Barely Able to Speak, Wife Says

“He can barely talk—and only in very short sentences—most of the time he is unintelligible,” Zhang said in an email viewed by the Epoch Times. “Gao’s son was incredibly excited to speak to him on the phone, and was completely shocked that he barely understood his father, that his voice was monotone, and that he was only giving 2 or 3 word answers to questions and wasn’t initiating any of the discussion,” the email continued.

Once dubbed the “conscience of China,” Gao Zhisheng spoke out powerfully for the persecuted and dispossessed. Now, after five years of abuse, the voice that challenged injustice is, for the moment at least, almost silenced.
Since Gao, a celebrated Chinese human rights lawyer, was released from custody last week, news about his condition has trickled out through his wife, Geng He, who lives in California with their two children.
Geng He has only been able to have a few brief conversations with her husband, but she has spoken extensively to her sister, who is with Gao in Urumqi. Chinese security officials live in their home and monitor them, while others are stationed outside.
Geng He described her conversations with Gao both on Twitter and in discussions with a family friend, Sherry Zhang, who visits and spends time with the family in the Bay Area, where they live. Geng He has declined interviews with the media, but publishes updates about Gao’s condition on Twitter.
A note from Aug. 12 is chilling in its depiction of Gao’s degraded faculties: “When I was speaking with Gao the phone cut off, so I called him back and asked: ‘What were we talking about?’ Gao said: ‘I don’t know.’ I asked: ‘How did the call get cut off?’ Gao said: ‘I don’t know.’ I said: ‘Look, do you understand what I’m saying or not? Can you not hear, or do you not understand?’”
At that point the phone passed to Geng He’s sister, who said: “He’s been locked in a dark cell by himself for five years, fed a steamed bun and a bowl of cabbage every day. You have to patiently help him learn to speak again,” according to Geng He’s account on Twitter.
Tianyu, Gao Zhisheng’s young son, was disappointed and confused after attempting to speak with his father on the telephone. He had been practicing Chinese in order to speak with his dad, but after getting off the phone simply said: “Dad can’t speak Chinese!” according to Sherry Zhang, who visited the family.
“Gao has been utterly destroyed,” said a recent statement from Freedom Now, a nonprofit based in Washington, D.C., which has followed Gao’s case for several years. “Guards were strictly instructed not to speak with him. He was not allowed any reading materials, television, or access to anyone or anything. … He has lost many teeth from malnutrition. It is believed he was also repeatedly physically tortured.”
Jared Genser, president of Freedom Now and a pro bono attorney for the Gao family, said in a telephone interview, “We hope the U.S. impresses on China the need to allow him to leave for medical treatment in the U.S. Without that help and support, Gao’s future physical and mental health is very much in question.”
Genser continued: “The only thing worse than Gao being killed was for him to be horrifically mentally and physically tortured. He’s a shell of his former self, and it’s devastating for Geng He and her family. She just wants to take care of him, and that’s what we’re hoping will happen. But the Chinese government doesn’t make anything easy there.”
