Group Urges Release of Falun Gong Practitioner Near Death

We have an update on a Falun Gong practitioner who is reportedly near death. The Falun Dafa Information Center released an urgent call today for Zhou Xiangyang.

Zhou has been held in prison in Tianjin, a city 2 hours away from Beijing, because he practices Falun Gong. Falun Gong is a spiritual practice that's been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since 1999.

We've reported on Zhou several times because more than 3000 residents from his hometown have signed petitions asking Chinese authorities to release him.

And last week, Amnesty International issued their own urgent call for Zhou's release. They said his family members had visited him in prison and said he was being tortured there.

We spoke to Levi Browde, the Executive Director of the Falun Dafa Information Center. He said that Zhou's case is representative of something that's becoming more and more common—ordinary Chinese citizens standing up to authorities and asking them to stop persecuting Falun Gong practitioners.

Browde also said in a statement from the Falun Dafa Information Center, "After so many villagers in China have courageously singed their names to a petition for [Zhou's] release, we hope more kindhearted people around the world can also add their voice and save this man's life."
