Daughter of Blind Rights Lawyer Chen Guangcheng Denied Education

As the school year begins for kids across China, one six-year-old in Shangdong, China is being denied her education. She’s the daughter of self-taught blind rights lawyer, Chen Guangcheng.

Chen is known as a hero in Linyi City for defending victims of forced abortions. Since February 24th, the couple’s six-year-old daughter, Chen Kesi, has also had to bear the house arrest with her parents. Her books and toys were confiscated, according to He Peirong, a fellow rights activist who has previously been detained for trying to visit Chen.

Hong Kong’s Apple Daily newspaper reported the girl has not been allowed to attend school. The paper quoted an anonymous official in Linyi City who said she met all requirements and there should be no reason to not allow her attendance. Her parents are worried she will be deprived of an education.

A Chinese law expert at New York University, Jerome Cohen, says this action (quote) “violates the educational rights of parents and child under the Chinese constitution.”
