After Libyan rebels captured Tripoli and prompted the family of strongman Moammar Gadhafi to flee, ordinary civilians and photographers were able to enter the family’s mansions and compounds for the first time.

Gold and marble fittings, a gold mermaid-themed bed, vineyards, and fruit trees adorn the various farms and compounds that were overrun by rebels last week, according to photos.

Gadhafi’s son, Hannibal, and his daughter, Aisha, are said to have escaped into Algeria. As for the strongman himself, some say that he is holed up in the town of Sirte, which is the last town held by loyalists of the former regime.
