Members of the European Parliament Condemn Organ Harvesting in China

“In China, organ harvesting has become basically a booming business. For kidneys, the waiting time in Europe is several years, in China, it’s 1 to 4 weeks. This shows that China has a huge bank of living people from whom organs can be removed at any time. We must save innocent people from being killed in China at any time for their organs.”

On December 12th, Members of the European Parliament took a stand against harvesting organs from prisoners of conscience, including large numbers of Falun Gong practitioners in China.

On December 12th, the European Parliament adopted a resolution against harvesting organs from prisoners of conscience in China. One of the authors of the resolution, Monica Macovei is a member of the biggest political group in the European Parliament – Christian Democrats.
[Monica Macovei, Member of the European Parliament]:
“International reports show 100,000 organ transplants in China in the last 10 years. More than half come from Falun Gong. <…> The government launched a nationwide persecution to eradicate the traditional and peaceful spiritual practice of Falun Gong, which follows the principles of Truth, Compassion, Tolerance. In China, organ harvesting has become basically a booming business. For kidneys, the waiting time in Europe is several years, in China, it’s 1 to 4 weeks. This shows that China has a huge bank of living people from whom organs can be removed at any time. We must save innocent people from being killed in China at any time for their organs.”
Macovei is the former Minister of Justice of Romania. She was appalled by the practice of organ harvesting from non-consenting prisoners and decided to join the efforts to stop it.
[Monica Macovei, Member of the European Parliament]:
“It is important to save the lives of the people. We can’t accept that people are taken away their organs without their prior consent and against their wish. The answer is “no,” we don’t accept that.”
The resolution states that majority of victims of organ harvesting are practitioners of the meditation practice Falun Gong, which began to be persecuted in China in 1999.
[Monica Macovei, Member of the European Parliament]:
“I insisted over half of these people who are the victims of the harvesting of organs come from the Falun Gong organization. Basically, practitioners are the main victim of this crime after the 1999 peaceful demonstration.”
The resolution calls for European citizens to be informed about organ harvesting before they go to China for organ transplants, to ensure they will not participate indirectly in the killings.
[Monica Macovei, Member of the European Parliament]:
“Yes, I would prohibit all Europeans from doing this. For if we know how these organs are taken from, are removed from people, by sacrificing others. This shouldn’t be done. It is immoral and it is against our values in the EU. So I would expand such a regulation at the level of the Union.”
Macovei calls on all people of the world to not be indifferent, to act fast and save the lives of innocent people in China.
[Monica Macovei, Member of the European Parliament]:
“And I would also like to remind a quotation from Dante in Inferno. “The worst places in hell are reserved for those who stand aside during the times of moral crisis.” We are now in moral crisis so we should act. This is not necessarily related to Chinese people, it is toall people in the world who stand aside in times of moral crisis.”
