LOS ANGELES—Some performances have the power to change people and awaken them to new values and artistic achievements that they didn’t know were possible.

Television and Broadway actress Tristin Mays experienced such a revelation at Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company’s Friday night sold-out show at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

“I would definitely say it’s one of the most incredible shows I’ve ever seen,” said Ms. Mays.

“The show changed my life. It was so beautiful. I’ve seen dance moves today that I’ve never seen in my life—ever—not even on Broadway,” she said.

Ms. Mays got her break as a child model, then started doing television, including both Nickelodeon and Disney shows, and she was in the Broadway version of The Lion King.

“I appreciate everything about dance and theater and everything like that,” she said. “I think everyone should go see this show.”

The New York-based Shen Yun uses the medium of classical Chinese dance to bring to life legends, stories, and values of traditional Chinese culture. The Shen Yun website describes it this way: “A Western philharmonic orchestra plays the foundation, while traditional Chinese instruments lead the melodies. The sound produced is uniquely pleasing to the ear. The ensemble at once expresses both the grandeur of a Western orchestra and the distinct sensibilities of China’s 5,000-year-old civilization.”

“The orchestra was absolutely incredible,” said Ms. Mays. “They mixed in so many different kinds of instruments that I’d never heard together. They were smooth at certain points, and they would pick up the pace at certain other points, which was incredible.”

Her appreciation was clear: “I would really like to thank everyone in the orchestra, personally.”

A few of the dances stood out to her. “My favorite dance in the show was The Lotus Leaves, that was really incredible, and the Silk Sleeves,” she said. “Those were incredible.”

“I really wish I could meet and greet every one of the dancers, so if you guys are watching, you guys are amazing. Keep going, don’t ever stop, and I appreciate everything you did tonight.”
