At least 18 people died from persecution in the four years of Bo Xilai’s term as the Chinese Communist Party boss in the southwestern city of Chongqing. Before last week Bo had hopes of entering the top ranks of the Party, but he was removed from his position after a political scandal involving his former right hand man, Wang Lijun.
Those who died under Bo Xilai’s reign were practitioners of the Falun Gong spiritual practice—a traditional spiritual practice based in the tenets of truth, compassion and tolerance. Bo and several others have been sued in overseas lawsuits for taking part in persecuting the group. The persecution was launched by former Chinese regime leader Jiang Zemin in 1999.
While Bo is notorious for spearheading the persecution of Falun Gong in northeastern Liaoning province while he was governor there, his involvement continued after taking post in Chongqing at the end of 2007. Soon after, Bo also handpicked Wang Lijun to become Chongqing’s police chief. The pair had worked together in Liaoning.
In September 2008, Falun Gong practitioner Qin Dachun died after being held at the Xishanping Labor Camp in Chongqing city. He was kidnapped and beaten before dying at age 56.
Several months later, another Falun Gong practitioner died after being sent to the same labor camp. Jiang Xiqing’s children were notified of his death in January 2009. Despite requesting to police that their father’s body remain several hours at the morgue, authorities forcibly cremated Jiang.
In September 2011, Falun Gong practitioner Xu Zhen died within a month of being sent to the Chongqing Women’s Labor Camp.
In total, 18 Falun Gong practitioners are known to have died from persecution in Chongqing since Bo assumed office there. More than 200 were sent to labor camps. Many were held in facilities designed to force Falun Gong adherents into giving up their practice through mental and physical torture.
