Lydia Wang is six months pregnant. She came to the United States in July this year because this is her second pregnancy. If she had stayed in China, she would’ve been forced to abort her child under the Chinese regime’s one-child policy.

“No mother in the world would want to give up her child, so I chose to leave China.”
But, it’s not only her unborn child whom Lydia wants to protect. Recently she found out her 58-year-old mother had been arrested in southern China. Her mother travelled there from Hunan province to send clothing and personal items to Lydia.

“I called my mom and told her I received the items. But I couldn’t reach her the next day. I found out later she had been arrested and is being held at the Zuhai First Watch House.”
Her mother was taken on November 10th. It was during the Chinese regime’s 18th Party Congress, when authorities were undertaking sweeping security measures. Lydia’s says her mother and the friends she stayed with were targeted because they practice Falun Gong. It’s a spiritual practice the Chinese regime has cracked down on since 1999. Security officials keep close tabs on practitioners, and often detain them without due cause.

“This was not the first time my mother was arrested, but the eighth time. She had been sentenced to labor camp on several occasions before.”
Lydia knows these sentences can be dangerous. Her father, who also practiced Falun Gong, was severely beaten by police during illegal detentions. He passed away in September 2009.

“So I’m really worried about my mother’s safety now. And I hope that through the media, I can call on the international community, the United Nations, and different governments to give attention to the Chinese regime’s persecution of Falun Gong.”
She also has a message to her mother’s captors.

“I also have a sincere message to the different level officials in China. Falun Gong practitioners only want to become good people by following the principles of Truth, Compassion and Tolerance. I hope you can see the truth of it, and stop this persecution of good people.”
Currently living in New York, Lydia says she is planning an appeal effort to US leaders to free her mother.
