There’s been a flurry of discussion about just what’s going to happen to China’s notorious labor camp system. Also known as “reform through labor” or “laojiao” in Chinese, the system has come under harsh criticism, both inside and outside of China, for flouting the rule of law.
On Monday, January 7th, state-run CCTV made an unofficial announcement via its Sina Weibo account, that the Chinese regime would “end the use” of labor camps this year. But soon, that turned into a pledge to reform it instead.
In this China Focus, we talk about what the labor camp system shows about China’s legal system, and why the Chinese Communist Party has not been forthcoming with any significant moves to fix the deficient system.
